Multilingualism
[edit]...
Hi Sj. The pages in question are not old pages. They are the current pages; and they automatically update the wikimediafoundaton.org website. So, they must stay protected. I can make a set of subpages to work on. A good option would be that you ask for sysop status here. You certainly have enough edits so that won't be a problem. Anthere.
What we should do is merge a short, well synchronized page from different wikipedias in a demonstration page on community-wiki to show even more clearly that it is possible to work multilingually on contents instead of in 50 language corners. There is a developing effort to be taken to make filtering of unwanted languages in the edit-mode possible. This and another couple of "minor" (;)) changes on wikilandia and this will be a "world communication tool" about as important to human evolution as the invention of the wheel. I know it's possible. Trust me. It's good for you. (the latter two sentences are a quote from a "Spain"-song I frequently use.) Hi Anthere too btw. What do you folks think about it? MattisManzel 11:13, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Multilingual budgeting
[edit]Hi Sj,
w:fr:Utilisateur:Roby is willing to have all pages about financial issues translated in all (or most) languages, as well as those mediawiki fundraising messages appearing on top of pages. He thinks that it may be illegal not to have those messages in languages other than en, and to be honest, I fear he also thinks we are not honest about how money is used :-( One of the big reason he wants to have this done, is to be able to have us be clear about how money is used rather than hiding the information. He wants to be able to ask us proof. But well...
Anyway, one of the reason he is worried is that he does not speak English really. But he would like to coordinate translations anyway. Could you give him a hand about this ?
We started a page on fr : w:fr:Wikipédia:Wikipédia et l'argent on the topic. PS : I also put this message to Elian. Thanks :-) Anthere 19:00, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Core departments
[edit]Financial officer is the single most important person to name *right now*. Now, it is best that the whole board has possibility to say it agrees, even if the answer appears obvious :-) And currently, Jimbo is on holidays... and his mail is broken. So, I wait :-) Stupid eh ? Budgeting et al
[edit]Nice work on improving that page! Revamping it was number 1,056,457 on my ToDo list. :) --mav 10:38, 27 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I appreciate another good work of yours there. Tomos 18:19, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Grants
[Reference materials grant]
At this point, I don't think it's possible for the foundation to apply for this grant by the deadline. However, I don't want to discourage contributions, as they can be re-edited into future applications. Gentgeen 05:52, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Language file updates
[edit]Hi Hashar, Can you please tell me what is going on with pages like Language files to be updated & Requests for languageXX.php update ? It has been worrying me for weeks, and apparently Arwel has been worried, too.
- Well the port from meta:LanguageXX.php to cvs is a hard task specially with languages using special characters like zh: :o) We (developpers) are trying our best to updates them. I will possibly have a look at the lastest update and put the changes in cvs.
Also, I see you once helped update a list of %-completeness for mesg translations in different languages. It would be nice to see that list updated... but only devs have the ability to run the script, I suppose. Be well, +sj+ 04:21, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Everyone can run the script. It's ./maintenance/DiffLanguage.php, you will need a working copy of the mediawiki software in a given langage, the script load a given language file and compare it to the english one. I haven't run this script for 2 months or so and I think some languageXX.php got updated with the english data :( But I might have a look again and update the meta pages :o)
- So basicly, If I am not too lazy this week-end, the meta pages might get updated :p Hashar 13:52, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Usability
[edit]AaronPeterson
I really need pages broken into small, managable chunks. I know that mediawiki has per header editing, and direct to header linking, however, as so many ideas fit nicely into multiple categories that I find myself deperately wanting smaller pages, with a method of embedding pages together.
I'm currently using my wiki ( http://escargot.icehouse.net/mediawiki/ ) experimenting with templates, and organization of my personal projects.
I feel that quite a few of my smaller pages are/will be linked together well with the category system. I am working to make the navigation between these smaller pages be acceptaptable alternatives to large pages... I actually detest large pages!.. but I recognize that they have some value, in that the headed ideas are neccissarily grouped together...
It's a tough call, but I'm banking on the furthering of wiki technology in the sub page embedding features specifically...
Actually, Another possible solution to the write once--use many problem is to write large pages and have the ability to rip areas out of the large page and embed them into other pages... somehow, I think it makes more sence to just write pages that need to be embeded into a book, chapter by chapter in the first place... and then have a grouping type page...
Anyway, I'm pretty tired, (6:07 am) and I'm planning to work on, or promote this method of wiki producing, so, hopefully after I have a bit of php development under my belt, I'll be able to take the renderer and have it make a nice, one page, users guide out of all of the sub pages. AP on working with other's ideas
In order to integrate ideas together, I feel that they must be on the same topic. I don't like digressing on a wiki page with a little tip on how to do something, it makes the usefull information content less dence when people start filling out long documentation pages with all of the tidbits of things that they learned... because 1/2 the people know it, and 1/2 the people are looking for something else... a link should be sufficient..
However, a brief summary of the page that is being linked to is wonderfull.. I'd like to have the ability to have a " wiki link+ pages short summary" type wiki link... so each wiki page can have a summary table in it, that would be embeded like a template... Templates are probably a bit of a server hog in the current implementation... but.. it's supposed to be wiki quick for the people, and that means whipping them computers... er... software engineers into finding the right algorithms and caching schemes... This type stuff is pretty high on my life goals list.. and I'm going to have to learn how to do it, or sponsor somebody to do it before I die, or I'll feel unfulfiled.
Old Pages moving
[edit]Hi, was there any reason you deleted OldWikiPediaLogo? Someone on IRC just mentioned it was a shame it was deleted. It wasn't listed on VfD and may have broken links from Wikipedia. I've undeleted it for now. Please put it on VfD if there is any reason it should not exist, at least as a redirect so people can still see the old page in the history if they want.
