User:Jon (WMF)/Edit for dark mode support
This page is currently a draft. More information pertaining to this may be available on the talk page. Translation admins: Normally, drafts should not be marked for translation. |
If you are reading this it is likely that I made an edit to a script or template and you are probably interested in why.
By fixing errors, I'm not becoming the maintainer of those scripts or templates.
If you have any questions, please ping me on my talk page. I would also appreciate it if you helped fix the errors.
Why have I edited your page?
[edit]The Wikimedia foundation is rolling out dark mode beginning with wikis we have flagged as being ready (based on wikis identified as having less accessibility errors in dark mode than light mode). To reduce overwhelming the community we are taking every precaution to minimize the work created by providing fixes for gadgets/templates where the issue impacts a large amount of our readers/editors.
We have created mw:Recommendations for night mode compatibility on Wikimedia wikis to guide communities to how to fix these issues. If this is the first time you have heard of this, please familiarize yourself with the documentation there.
Why didn't you go through the talk page first?
[edit]Ideally we would do this, but unfortunately we've found many important templates and user scripts are unmaintained and/or unresponsive and discussing on the talk page first would not scale to the many pages that need updating.
For this reason, we limit our changes to templates which are widely used across the wiki and where the fixes are simple and non-controversial (E.g. have no visible change to the default experience).
Please do not revert things that are not broken, simply because you do not understand it. We anticipate dark mode to be used by 25% of our traffic so you may be breaking the ability for readers to consume information.
You broke my script
[edit]Firstly, apologies! There are lots of templates and gadgets with errors and edits are being restricted to the minimum possible fix and where we have judged the change is non-controversial. It's possible we may make mistakes in this process, and if we have we sincerely apologize!
Where breakage occurs, you should of course feel free to revert any changes made, and apply fixes yourselves after reading mw:Recommendations for night mode compatibility on Wikimedia wikis and understanding the motivation behind the change in the first place.
