This paper will discuss digital divide problems in realtion with the big data analysis using Doug... more This paper will discuss digital divide problems in realtion with the big data analysis using Douglas Massey and Plato's political analysis. I argue that (1) the gap in data-productions caused by the digital divide between white and non-white bodies mimics the Massey’s mechanism of social exclusion. (2) The process of recognizing and ignoring the biased-data seems to affirm the Massey’s analysis on opportunity hoarding and exploitation. Finally, I will (3) explore the issue of egality and bonum commune in the Aristotelian idea of friendship of virtue. I will suggest that this idea will help us constructing the concept of digital welfare as an effort to negotiate the artificial digital border.

Love and the Capacity to Love An Ontological Analysis of Love According to Ibn Sina and Thomas Aquinas

This paper will elaborate on the different concepts of love as offered by Thomas Aquinas and Ibn ... more This paper will elaborate on the different concepts of love as offered by Thomas Aquinas and Ibn Sina; two prominent thinkers representing the Christian and Islamic tradition. Risālah fī al-'ishq (The Treatise on Love) of Ibn Sina is comparable-in terms of theological and philosophical approaches-to the Aquinas' treatment of love in Summa Theologiae II-IIae q.23, a.2. I argue that since Ibn Sina's ontological definition of love is related tightly to his cosmogony, then there is no rigid distinction between the love of the Pure Being and the contingent beings. Love acts as a "medium" of unification and perfection towards the Pure Being. The different levels of love are already determined in the contingent beings according to the principle of harmonia during the emanative process. For Aquinas, love is present only in the rational being as it is a grace of God, the Holy Spirit himself. But this similar notion of Aristotelian harmonia in Aquinas (1) would never be able to blur the wide, apparent discrepancy between God and human beings. (2) Through the model of rational love as an intellectual counsel, we can see that there is no sense of determinism on Aquinas' concept of rational love.

This paper will elaborate the different Platonic elements of dialogue as philosophical basis for ... more This paper will elaborate the different Platonic elements of dialogue as philosophical basis for Gadamerian hermeneutical structures. The intersubjective cross-examination found in Platoâ€™s Dialogue shows that the real meaning comes from the real encounters between speakers; or in Gadamerâ€™s term: encounters between text and the reader. For Gadamer, it is always important in this pursuit of meaning and truth that we examine our own prejudice. Cross-examining our own claim of truth and belief is an essential element in Gadamerâ€™s hermeneutics. I argue that we can see how the Platonic model of dialogue is easily aligned with the Gadamerian positive approach towards â€˜traditions.â€™ There is a constant dialogue at work in interpretation, a dialogue between the past and the present, between different traditions and points of view. Dialogue is an important keyword for both Plato and Gadamer in their efforts to their existential quest of wisdom.
