Neighborhoods face many urban challenges and threats which have environmental, social and economic impacts on any future development. The research aims to develop environmentally responsible model of neighborhoods. It could be achieved through sustainable planning process, developing the mechanism of urban design elements and the resource management of the physical environment in order to enhance quality of life and sustain natural resources. The research discusses and analyzes urban planning trends and rating systems for urban development to draw out design elements and a set of criteria for enhancing physical urban context of neighborhoods. An analytical study for neighborhood case studies is performed to conclude the best sustainable practices of urban design elements. The study also ensures the importance of computational simulation use in planning and design processes to achieve high-performance buildings and urban spaces. The research defines a methodology to develop Graduates villages in Burullus lake into sustainable neighborhoods to accommodate future urban development through optimizing urban parameters that would collectively promote high density urban growth, maximize land efficiency, develop mobility and energy systems and sustain natural resources with the assistance of simulation tools.

Students, professors, and workers move to campus daily to fulfill their educational, research, work, and cultural needs. Effective decision-making for the campus urban environment requires more updated data and interactive communication with users to manage crowds and provide an ideal learning and research environment, especially during maintenance works, infrastructure upgrades, paving, etc. In this study, an attempt is made to apply and develop a process for digital modeling of the Mansoura University campus in Egypt using the integration of geographical information systems (GIS) and building information modeling (BIM) as an approach to smart campus management. The study develops a 3D GIS-generated model using ESRI City Engine software and visualizes it using ESRI web-scene portal and virtual reality application. The 3D GIS model was evaluated in terms of the quality of the driven data to measure its ability to support urban decision-making. The study finds that the 3D-GIS model fulfills up to 80% of the required data quality parameters and needs support from other software and databases in the remaining 20%. The study is supported by Mansoura University administrations and related research entities for updating its GIS-database.

It is argued that it is essential to promote the pace of rural electrification and decrease its concentration on a relatively small number of developing countries. Notwithstanding this emphasis, improvement in electrifying remote rural areas has been slow. In this context, recent global research pays recognisable attention to the implementation of approaches that promote sustainable design in the built environment and ensure energy efficiency. In this regard, housing building forms is considered an important parameter which significantly affects the energy consumption for residential neighbourhoods. Therefore, this research paper endeavours to investigate the influence of housing building forms on energy efficiency, taking into account the hot climatic conditions in one of the urban regeneration projects in Egypt. To accomplish the research aim, a comparative analysis is performed using parametric numerical analysis — DesignBuilder energy analysis — to compare different parametric hypothetical proposals of various building configurations. Due to the difference in unit floor areas and building ratio, energy use intensity (EUI) is used as the comparative factor between the alternatives. The study identifies that energy efficiency in buildings is greatly dependent on their forms, which would help designers and urban planners to suggest the best energy performance of housing building forms at the conceptual design phase. This also has implications for other environmental, social and economic urban planning issues.

They offer a digital representation for both architectural and urban scale to produce efficient governance model and sustain the quality of life and urban dynamics in cities. The vitality of historic urban districts has a great influence on sustainable urban development and urban regeneration approaches in cities. Egypt is rich with historic locations of which many are under threat from poor urban management and inadequate identity preservation especially in the Delta Region. The research aims to apply GIS digital tools and BIM models to the urban heritage context in Egypt to produce 3D integrated model for documentation, visualization and data analysis of the historic district in Rosetta City. The methodology process includes field survey, digital mapping and BIM models integration in GIS platforms using City Engine software. The process is discussed in terms of the accuracy of BIM-GIS data especially in Egypt, technical issues related to integration process and related urban policies in historic districts that could be supported by generated models. Digital maps are published using Google Maps and City Engine Web Scene online platforms.

The government adopted establishment of new communities along the international coastal axis represented in new cities, urban expansions and villages. Despite of this optimistic vision, the current state didn’t match the proposed objectives of the urban development plans. The aim of research is to evaluate urban sustainability of the selected neighborhood cases in the existing new communities. The research methodology is based on descriptive and analytical methods through data analysis, study visits, interviews, surveys and prioritizing. The evaluation is based on UN-Habitat principals of sustainable neighborhoods to be compact, integrated, and connected. It recommends a range of quantitative measurements as a sustainability analysis of neighborhoods through five main principals; efficient street network, high density, mixed land-use, social mix and limited land-use specialization. The results of evaluation show the weaknesses of the physical urban context efficiency for each case to be developed. Finally, urban development guidelines are suggested to promote urban growth and maximize urban efficiency.

The study defines urban potentials for the through the analysis of current physical urban context and population densities and their needs. It focuses on the optimization of physical urban form for residential buildings. The proposed methodology introduces and analyzes alternative design models for the residential building forms with respect to residents’ needs, approaching high density population as a strategy to develop social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability. The effect of solar radiation on design alternatives could be measured using simulation tools to develop design concepts. The conclusion of this study indicates that the morphology of a sustainable neighborhood and the solar design of its residential buildings should serve as a foundation of sustainable environment and offer suitable solutions for urban problems in s...
