In contrast to prior research focus on conditions and practices enhancing focal actors’ engagement with compassion, the papers we assembled explore the processes and mechanisms that help under-explored actors- as leaders, sufferers and external agents - such as job coaches, inspire others to respond compassionately, and create ripple effects of compassion in organizations. The papers in the symposium also acknowledge the generative potential embedded in engagement with compassion, and illuminate how compassion can be leveraged to deal with systemic organizational issues creating pain in organizations. The session features a combination of theoretical and empirical papers undertaking diverse theoretical perspectives, drawing on multiple data sources from diverse organizational settings. The paper presentations will be followed by a discussant presentation led by Sally Maitlis, who will outline opportunities f...

To these common usages can be added emotional capacity (the ability to relate healthily at an emotional level to the world), the moral capacity to treat other beings with respect, the capacity for humour, the capacity to love, and the capacity to engage in a spiritual life. As the list of capacities grows something interesting happens. We move from bottom line capacities, to analyse and to deliver, to other perhaps higher areas; to act morally, to love. All of these capacities are vital and yet I am proposing that there is a broad and fundamental capacity that underpins and influences all of these. This is the capacity to meaning make, not in a narrow analytic, intellectual way but in a holistic way which creates each person's worldview or view-of-the-worldoutside-of-me. Meaning-making and developmental stages I will digress a little to explore the notion of meaning-making. Kegan tells a tale of two brothers aged three and seven who are standing in the viewing gallery of the Empire State Building. "Look at the people down there", exclaims the younger, "they are tiny ants". His older brother exclaims at the same time "Look at the people down there, they look like tiny ants". Here we have a fascinating difference in meaning-making structure. The younger recognises people, but sees them to be the same size as ants. No problem, his meaning-making is not troubled by logical consistency, (ants carrying shopping?), the people are tiny ants. His older brother's meaning-making has evolved somewhat; he has the benefit of perspective and logic. He knows that the people down there are a long way away and just look like tiny ants. What follows is an example of different meaning-making in two managers. "You must have been pleased to secure the funding for your multi-agency project. You've been successful." he said. She replied, "Yes, I am pleased but I see it as symbolic, we all worked together to secure the funding and it was working together which was important, not the funding." He has attached importance to the results, to what has been achieved. She has attached only symbolic importance to this, the real 'success' is in the coming together of different agencies.

Open Hiring protects and restores dignity by allowing a job independent of background. The case of Greyston Bakery is used to highlight how dignity is restored, protected and well -being is promoted.

Recently, organizations have been called to further engage in social innovation in service (SIS) in an attempt to address these challenges. However, the existing service literature does not offer explicit processes regarding how to manage these social innovation efforts at the human interaction level. By drawing on both Humanistic Management and Service literatures, this paper develops a conceptual framework to guide the social innovation in service efforts. More specifically, this paper aims to answer a key question of: how can organizations manage human interactions to help maximize social innovation in service (SIS) outcomes? This paper identifies four foundational values (respect, trust, fairness, and inclusion) that should be at the core of the proposed processes (communication, collaboration, and compassion) needed in order to achieve the desired outcomes of SIS (relieving suffering, increasing well-being, and protecting and promoting human dignity). Subsequently, a typology of service organizations is offered with different combinations of processes at the human interaction level, highlighting the synergistic effect of the three identified processes. The proposed framework in this paper is a first step in bridging two disciplines to highlight their potential and role in addressing the global challenges.

In contrast to prior literature that explore the dualism of stability and change and frame these as conflicting poles that need to be reconciled, sperate in space or time, we explore the duality embedded in these dimensions and examine how these two poles can be connected. The session features four empirical papers undertaking diverse theoretical perspective, examining the processes enabling the weaving of stability and change in organizational change planning, change implementation and on-going organizing. Presentations will be followed by discussion of the integration of change and paradox research by the session chair- Wendy Smith, who will offer insights for further development of a paradox perspective of change. We also expect that an open dialogue and discussion with the audience at the end of this session, will provoke future research questions and collaborations. The session is design...

Our model considers structured asset-backed securitization with a credit enhancement (tranching) procedure. We assume that the originator can affect the default probability and the conditional loss distribution. We show that the optimal form of retention must be proportional to the pool default loss even in the absence of systemic risk when the originator can affect the conditional loss given default rate, yet the current regulations propose a constant retention rate.
