- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- Approved. While there still are specific implementation details that can be worked out and refined, the running of the bot should not be delayed because of it. Legoktm (talk) 14:01, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Operator: User:DrTrigon
- Task: SubsterBot does edits on selected pages whenever they are needed and add text from arbitrary sources

As already stated on Wikidata:Data collaborators#User:DrTrigonBot I would like to run the SubsterBot part directly here on WikiData instead of spread over several Wikipedia languages as it is now the situation. This is for the next step involving more than just interwiki link data. Thanks and greetings --DrTrigon (talk) 16:21, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This has more than enough support to be approved. Right now, all that it's waiting on is for the remaining features that the bot needs to go live on Wikidata, and then the customary 250ish edit test run. Collapsing to save space. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:23, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply] |

Comment I don't see any test edits on your bot account. Could you run test edits on that account. Up to 200 would be good. Techman224Talk 23:01, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- Hello to all and thanks for all your interest! Sorr for the long delay - since I am busy at the moment I'll try to focus my wiki activities to this topic for the next time... ;) As all my test edits on wikidata-test got lost during the last reset, I started now to edit here (Special:Contributions/DrTrigonBot). But Sven is completely right and unfortunately not all functions needed in order to set properties with simple quantities (as claims/statement) are supported yet! I setup a first configuration page (User:DrTrigon/Sandbox) and put an alias DrTrigonBot:CHF in order to link to item Q25344, as you can see there. Now the bot should set the value there but I do not know how to do this right now - thus I put an output log to User talk:DrTrigon/Sandbox. The configuration page format is lent from dewiki (and others) where the bot is running already. It might thus look strange and is not fixed yet - mainly also because it is not clear where to put those config pages.
- So the open question to me at the moment are:
- how to add/edit simple values/quantities (e.g. numbers and strings) by bot/api on items?
- where to store the configuration pages?
- how to update thousands of such values efficiently? (minor priority at the moment)
- Hope this clarifies some concepts and thanks in advance for any feedback, inputs and hints! Greetings ;)) --DrTrigon (talk) 17:23, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- Hello all - thanks for your participation. As I see, now/finally all needed functions (wbcreateclaim, wbsetclaimvalue) should be available and thus I will - in the near future - set the bot up completely. In the course of doing this I think I would need a own (string) property, e.g. called "DrTrigonBot" or something more generic "BotAddedValue" or something like this. What do you think? Shall I request one on Wikidata:Property proposal? Thanks and Greetings! --DrTrigon (talk) 16:48, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- More important is the fact, that the bot runs now on Q25344 but on the property "inventory number" which changes hopefully soon... (it's just a work-a-round for now ;) Enjoy and Greetings --DrTrigon (talk) 21:33, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Sandbox properties created, the bot will now always use Sandbox-String (P370) whenever nothing else was specified. Greetings --DrTrigon (talk) 13:20, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Question: How can we prevent unwanted edits on aliases or properties like this of users that do not know how the bot works? This could become a serious problem if this would happen to hundreds of items and thus unlinking all from bot update e.g. Is there a protection possible? Thanks and Greetings --DrTrigon (talk) 15:11, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- 240 edits ... I think somewhen next week the magic border of 250 should be crossed ... Since I got no response or bug reports meanwhile I claim the bot works now quite reasonable. Thanks and Greetings ;) --DrTrigon (talk) 20:32, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Why is the bot using the property "Sandbox-String" (both as the property and as the source), and why is "DrTrigonBot:Exchange Rate Data:JPY" in the aliases at Q8146? Sven Manguard Wha? 21:05, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- The bot uses Sandbox-String because this is the "dummy" property it uses if the correct one is not available yet (it is not worth to create a bot specific dummy property, so those sandbox ones are wikidata wide)
- The alias is needed in order to link the configuration page Template:Exchange Rate Data to the item
- Greetings --DrTrigon (talk) 00:53, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes, but that's not what an Alias is for. Is there another, more tamper-proof and more hidden way to do it? Sven Manguard Wha? 01:50, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes - I know - but I do not know of another way and since nobody complained, I started using it. The important point is; it has to be possible to process (or find) multiple pages fast and efficient, that works with 'searchentities' and aliases (confer e.g. Wikidata talk:Infoboxes task force#Feasibility of DrTrigonBot/Subster to update Wikidata and all the other links I provided). If you have a good idea please step forward, I tried to start a discussion about exactly that issue several times on several different places in the past but never got an answer or help... back, please don't hide ongoing conversations. I would like to see this resolved before the bot is flagged. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:24, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]- No problem. Please tell me the solution and I will implement it! Where to store e.g. metadata (in a "searchable" way)? ;) Greetings --DrTrigon (talk) 20:26, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Use the talk page. We already have stuff like
{{Constraint}}
on it, just create a template like{{DrTrigonConfig}}
and store it on the talk page. Legoktm (talk) 01:00, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]- Yeah... as I proposed months ago... ;)
- First question; how are they searchable? (in an efficient way)
- Second; how do you want to configure thousands of entries like e.g. given by Template:Elo rating in an efficient way manually? (I will not do this by hand... ;)
- If you could clarify this - I would be vary happy... ;) Thanks and Greetings --DrTrigon (talk) 16:11, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- So seriously... do I understand this right - after asking yet again, I do not get any answer at all...?!??! So the consensus is; all my attempts to works this out are completely ignored - but the result of all the effort I put into this on my own are not satisfactory... very nice! I can live without bot flag - if you all insist in updating such stuff on wikidata manually do what ever you want! But please keep in mind; wikipedia is updated automatically and therefore wikidata will be useless and not needed at all in such cases... your decision! To make it clear; I will not put any further effort into this unless I got some useful feedback! --DrTrigon (talk) 20:22, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Lego has been out for the last few days, and will be out for a few more days, as he is on vacation. He let some of the other admins know, but I guess that he didn't make a public announcement anywhere. Sorry about the delay. Sven Manguard Wha? 01:29, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- I'm sorry about the late response DrTrigon, I forgot about this until your note on my talk page. I've gone ahead and approved it and will leave a more detailed comment on your talk page about what I was thinking about for implementation. Legoktm (talk) 14:01, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
