Over the last three years I have become accustomed to the rules and norms, written or unwritten, that govern Wikidata. I have indeed performed many high-volume QS edits on this account, but they have encompassed areas of lesser interest on average (natural numbers, dates/times, foreign relations...). Yet I wish to take a larger role in maintaining Wikidata than what rollback, as wonderful a right as it has been for the last six months, allows at present. I have begun participating more in property proposals, merging mass-created items, and working to eliminate duplicate labeling across languages. While I do not form this request because no speakers of South Asian languages are admins at present, bad edits in those languages that arise due to the confusion of those speakers can and have gone unchecked in some items that I have passed by, and being able to take up page protection and, if need be, blocks in clearly malicious instances of these edits would definitely help. --Mahir256 (talk) 08:28, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There might be canvasing issues.
--- Jura 05:46, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]- You also have a lot of canvasing comments, aren't you? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 15:24, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

- Support. Candidate presents a strong case for himself to fill the gap of an admin who is a native user of a South Asian language. Deryck Chan (talk) 11:30, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

edit- You mention South Asian languages; your edits have been mostly in Bangla and English, which are also your native languages according to your babel box. Are you at all comfortable with other languages of the area? Hindi for instance? Can you read Arabic at all (or Persian, Urdu, etc)? ArthurPSmith (talk) 16:22, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- @ArthurPSmith: There is a lot of lexical overlap among at least Indo-Aryan languages, including Bengali and Hindi, and I can decipher the Devanagari script comfortably, so in many instances I can "understand" Hindi text (and with some transliteration effort certain other Indo-Aryan languages). For liturgical reasons I can also decipher Perso-Arabic scripts comfortably, but there is less overlap in vocabulary between Bengali and either of Arabic or Persian, so my ability to "understand" Arabic or Persian is less. (I nevertheless cannot speak Hindi, Arabic, or Persian if I tried, and thus I would mark those as -0 among my Babel boxes.)
- In any case, I have always tried to exercise caution whenever I operate on languages I do not speak, checking for exact correspondences with other languages before, for example, adding sitelinks or performing merges, and will continue to exercise caution in these instances.
