Motivation
editOur vocabulary for describing artistic elements found in decorative works such as textiles and ceramics is not well-developed. To improve our coverage in this area, we need to be able to link stylized motifs in the arts with the real- or imaginary-world objects and concepts which they originally represented (though many are debased and have been reinterpreted over time). depicts (P180) does not quite capture the essence of this relationship and causes a constraint violation when used in this way. - PKM (talk) 20:22, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

- Question What about using based on (P144)? --Marsupium (talk) 23:11, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
- based on (P144) as currently defined requires a “work” as its object, not an animal or a plant or another naturally occurring object. - PKM (talk) 01:35, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
- Ah, I've missed that. Thank you! --Marsupium (talk) 18:34, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

- Comment It was pointed out to me off-Wiki that symbolizes (P4878) is also a related property. I'll be sure to add an instruction clarifying the distinction (motif represents = "some object", symbolizes = "meaning in a particular context"). Are we good to go with this one now? - PKM (talk) 20:50, 19 June 2019 (UTC)
