Motivation

edit

The Meteorological Service of Canada climate ID is used by the MSC to uniquely identify weather stations within Canada where official weather observations are taken, and serves as a permanent, unique identifier. By creating a new Wikidata item for each weather station within Canada, it becomes possible to query Wikidata for the weather station(s) closest to a particular city, obtain the MSC station number(s) and then query external MSC climate information databases to obtain real time, near real time and/or historical climate data recorded by the particular station. The MSC climate ID number also allows external lookup of MSC station information documents which provide highly detailed information about data capture configuration, instruments installed, periods of record capture, etc. for each Canadian station.
