Planned use | Insert weather station items into Wikidata to allow external climate databases to be queried for climate data, adding further information to a Wikidata query. This can be useful for automatically generating climate data for a city by finding the nearest weather station, then fetching external climate data for that closest weather station. |

Motivation
editThe Meteorological Service of Canada climate ID is used by the MSC to uniquely identify weather stations within Canada where official weather observations are taken, and serves as a permanent, unique identifier. By creating a new Wikidata item for each weather station within Canada, it becomes possible to query Wikidata for the weather station(s) closest to a particular city, obtain the MSC station number(s) and then query external MSC climate information databases to obtain real time, near real time and/or historical climate data recorded by the particular station. The MSC climate ID number also allows external lookup of MSC station information documents which provide highly detailed information about data capture configuration, instruments installed, periods of record capture, etc. for each Canadian station.
