Title
Roman tile: ceramic hypocaust tile fragment
Description
English: A fragment of a ceramic roman hypocaust flue (box flue) tile, dating from the 1st-4th centuries AD. The tile fragment, which is a light reddish brown colour, is 94mm long down its longest axis, 84mm wide at its widest point, 20mm thick and weighs 141.86 grammes. In plan view it is sub-triangular in shape, and sub-rectangular in profile. The upper surface of the tile does not retain any traces of mortar, but has been decorated with a series of linear striations in two lines at a 45 degree angle to each other, which create a 'combed' effect.
