Wide Guard (Japanese: ワイドガード Wide Guard) is a non-damaging Rock-type move introduced in Generation V.

Effect

Main article: Protection

Wide Guard protects all Pokémon on the user's side of the field for the rest of that turn from moves that can target multiple Pokémon, even those used by an ally that strike all Pokémon on the field (such as Earthquake and Surf). Wide Guard will block these moves even in Single Battles.

If the user goes last in the turn, the move will fail.

If a damaging Z-Move that targets multiple Pokémon targets a Pokémon protected by Wide Guard, the Z-Move will bypass Wide Guard but only do 25% of the original damage. Moves that break protection, like Feint, will remove the effects of Wide Guard. The Ability Unseen Fist allows contact moves to bypass Wide Guard.

Moves that are unaffected by protection are listed here.

This move has +3 priority, so it will be executed before most other moves.

Generation V-VI

In Generation V only, the chance that Wide Guard will succeed drops each time the user successfully and consecutively uses Endure, any protection move that only affects the user, Quick Guard, or Wide Guard. Each time, the chance of success is multiplied by 1/2.

Also in Generation V, if a Pokémon uses Feint or Shadow Force to attack its own ally who is protected by Wide Guard, Wide Guard will not be dispelled.

In Generations V and VI, Wide Guard could not block status moves that target multiple Pokémon.

Generation VII onwards

Due to an oversight, in version 1.0 of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Wide Guard reduces the damage of all damaging Z-Moves, rather than just damaging Z-Moves that target multiple Pokémon; this was fixed in version 1.1 of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. (There are no damaging Z-Moves that target multiple Pokémon in Pokémon Sun and Moon.)

If powered up by a Rockium Z into Z-Wide Guard, the user's Defense stat rises by one stage.

The user gives itself and teammates in the same room the Wide Guard status condition for one turn. This status protects Pokémon from wide-ranging moves. The Pokémon can still take damage from items or explosions.

The chance of the move failing rises if the user's most recently used move was Wide Guard or a move that evades enemies' attacks (such as Protect or Endure).

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Wide Guard is Aegislash's second move. It is obtained by reaching level 8 and upgrading Iron Defense into it instead of Iron Head. The user focuses in place for a short time to create a great shield on them. When this shield appears, boost count increases by 1, granting a shield to the user and shoves enemies in front. While this shield is active, enemy player attacks increase boost count by 1 for each different enemy player (capping at 4). When this move ends, shove enemies in front of the user once again and slow them for 2s. At level 13, the move's cooldown is reduced.
