Revel in Rivalry (Japanese: 集え 好敵手たち! Rivals Assemble!) was a story event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pair Bede & Hatterene. It also marked the debut of Hugh as an NPC.
The "Bede Poké Fair Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Bede & Hatterene for the duration of the event.
During this event, players could earn Prize Coins from battles that could be used to draw items from a prize box pool. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Daily Extreme Battle 1, which could only be challenged once per day. If the grand prize was drawn from the prize box, players could advance to the next prize pool. Extra Prize Coins were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.
The player could battle using Bede & Hatterene to obtain +0.6× bonus Prize Coins; Wally & Gallade, Marnie & Morpeko, Barry & Piplup/Prinplup/Empoleon, Gladion & Silvally, Hau & Raichu, Hop & Zamazenta, or Calem & Espurr/Meowstic to obtain +0.4× bonus Prize Coins; and any unlisted Rival or Fairy-type sync pairs to obtain +0.2× bonus Prize Coins.
This event featured the Battle Challenge, where players were challenged to defeat a team of strong opponents. Players could complete event missions by clearing these areas with teams using various theme skills, earning medals and other rewards.
In addition, players could earn a medal for completing all the story areas in the event.
The special event Rival Challenge was a tie-in to this event.
First run
The event first ran from June 16 to July 4, 2022. In this run, there were 19 prize pools in total, and the grand prizes included area info for event story areas, 5★ Scout Tickets, Power-Ups, Skill Spheres, a 4★ Strike Move Candy, a Tech Move Candy Coin, and a Strike Move Candy Coin. Players could earn Gems and Battle Points as rewards for completing event missions.
Second run
The event reran from January 23 to February 6, 2023. In conjunction with the "Bede Poké Fair Scout" for this run, Bede & Hatterene's sync grid was expanded with new grid tiles that could be unlocked at move levels 2, 4, and 5.
In this run, the total number of prize pools was decreased to 17, and the grand prizes included area info for event story areas, 5★ Scout Tickets, Power-Ups, Skill Spheres, and a Tech Move Candy Coin. Event missions were changed to award only Gems.
Third run
The event reran again from September 22 to October 6, 2023. In this run, the total number of prize pools was decreased to 13, though the grand prizes still included area info for event story areas, 5★ Scout Tickets, Power-Ups, Skill Spheres, and a Tech Move Candy Coin.
Unlike the previous rerun, Rival Challenge did not rerun alongside the event.
Plot
Bede and Hatterene battle Blue and his Pidgeot and Silver and his Ho-Oh. To Bede's disbelief, he loses the battle. Silver says he is too overconfident, while Blue compliments Bede's strength. Bede says that he is the elitest of the elite, and he'll surely win next time. However, Blue interrupts him and says that while Bede is talented, he cannot get strong enough to beat a Champion if he keeps doing what he is doing. Bede is affronted that Blue would insinuate he has a flaw. Blue says Bede's missing something, and he invites Bede to participate in an upcoming event called the New Stars of Pasio tournament. Every participant in the event will randomly get placed on a three-person team, and Blue thinks Bede will learn something from battling with teammates. Bede agrees to participate, if only so he can prove to that he is already perfect.
After entering, Bede ends up being put on a team with Hugh and Wally. Hugh scolds Bede for not paying attention to the rest of the team, and Bede says that they should be the ones watching him since he is the strongest one on the team. Hugh challenges him to a battle to see if Bede's actually stronger, and Wally nervously tells them to stop fighting each other. He suggests that they try battling another team, a suggestion that Bede and Hugh reluctantly accept.
They arrange a battle with the team of Hop, Hau, and Calem. Bede says that they will have no trouble at all against a team that Hop is on, and Hop retorts that Bede should not be surprised when he gets taken down by their teamwork. Sure enough, Hop's team wins the battle, to Bede's dismay. Hau comments that Bede and Hugh were just barking orders over each other, and Calem suggests that they might benefit from supporting each other as teammates. Bede says that Hugh just needs to be a good sport and follow his lead, but Hugh refuses to sit back and take orders from Bede. The two stare at each other for a moment before both turning around and walking away, leaving Wally alone. Meanwhile, Team Break has been watching the scene from afar, and they think that Bede, Hugh, and Wally's shoddy teamwork will provide them the perfect opportunity to steal their Pokémon.
Bede is walking through the forest with Hatterene, lamenting that he has to go through the hassle of teaming up, when he overhears Marnie talking to her teammates, Barry and Gladion. Marnie greets him, and her team approaches Bede. Barry asks him how things are going with Hugh and Wally, and Bede says it is the worst. He complains that he would've been fine if he was battling on his own, and teaming up is just a pain in the neck. However, Marnie suggests that learning how to work together with his teammates could help him get stronger as a Trainer. She feels like she can use what she learns here to make Spikemuth even better, so she is going to work together with her team and win this tournament. She is shouldering the hopes of her hometown when she battles here, and she is also looking forward to battling Bede and his team. Gladion adds that if Bede and his teammates are having a fight, they need to work things out and get back on track. Then, Marnie's team goes back to their practice. Bede muses that she is trying to get stronger not for her own sake, but to make her hometown better, and he wonders if there is a bigger goal he can aim for than personally becoming the strongest.
Meanwhile, Hugh is explaining the situation to Cheren and Bianca. Hugh says that he has never met anyone so stuck-up in his life, and Bianca says that they don't mesh because Hugh has always disliked anything that goes against his values. Cheren reminds him that he didn't enter the tournament just to fight with his teammates, so he might have to compromise a little. After all, his teammates are peers who stand beside him on equal footing. Cheren suggests that Hugh try to figure out what he can do to support his teammates, and Bianca says they will have way more fun that way. Hugh considers their words.
The day of the tournament eventually arrives. Wally is standing alone by the fountain in town, thinking about Bede and Hugh, when suddenly they both appear alongside their partner Pokémon. Bede says he is here to win, which Hugh thinks is obvious. But Bede then adds that if they're going to win, they will have to cooperate as a team. Adapting his own battle style to match someone else may be a valuable experience, and he does not want to continue losing disgracefully. Hugh agrees to cover Bede when he needs a hand, and he says they won't lose anymore. Bede and Hugh both warn each other not to slow the other down, and Wally is relieved that they've agreed to cooperate. Suddenly, a Masked Man comes running into the square, pursued by Gladion. Gladion's Silvally takes down the Masked Man's Primeape, and Wally asks Gladion what's going on. Gladion says that Team Break was planning to take advantage of the tournament to steal everyone's Pokémon, eliciting a strong reaction from Hugh.
In town, Blue is preparing to take down a group of Team Break members all on his own when Bede, Hugh, and Wally arrive to lend him a hand. Blue says he feels more secure with them here. One of the Masked Men boasts that they saw Bede's team's terrible teamwork during practice, so they will have no trouble taking them down and stealing their Pokémon. Hugh is furious that they not only interfered with the tournament but were also planning on stealing their partners, and he declares that they are about to feel his rage. Wally says that he will not just stand by and let Team Break do that, and Blue commends them for getting on the same page. Bede acknowledges that joining the tournament has made him a little bit stronger, but this has nothing to do with the tournament—in fact, they had to skip the tournament for this. However, Blue says they do not need to worry about that. Just then, Hop's and Marnie's teams arrive. Hau says they heard about everything from Gladion, so they came to help out. Silver also joins the group, saying that he needed to warm up. Since they're all on the same page, Blue invites everyone to cut loose on Team Break and then head back to the tournament. They all get ready to take down Team Break with their teams, with Bede stating that they have chosen the wrong team to mess with.

Bede | Team or no team, I am always the winner! |
Bede | I have to battle in a team? I just hope the other members of my team don't hold me back. Well...even then, I'll be sure to win. I'm the pride of Galar—and the most elite Trainer of them all! |

(Cave, Blue and Silver battle and defeat Bede)
Bede | I...I don’t believe it! I...lost? |
Silver | When you get too overconfident, you end up learning the hard way. |
Blue | Your name's Bede, right? I hear you're from Galar. Gotta say, this was my first battle with you, but you're pretty strong! I'm impressed. |
Bede | Oh, you must have an eye for talent! It's true, I'm the elitest of all of the elite...and it is I who carries the future of Galar! This loss was just a fluke. I'll be sure that next time— |
Blue | Lemme stop you there. You've got talent, but you can't keep going like this. |
Bede | Wha—?! |
Blue | Keep doing things this way, and sure, you'll get strong to a certain point... But you're not gonna be beating any Champions. |
Bede | How rude. It's almost as if you're insinuating that I've got a flaw of some sort. |
Blue | Yeah, I am. You're definitely missing something. Here, I have just the thing for you. Y'see, there's gonna be an event soon... It's called the New Stars of Pasio tournament. Feel up for that? Everyone who joins this tournament will be randomly placed on a three-person team. Maybe battling with teammates will help you get a new perspective. |
Bede | Hmph. Very well. In any case, this sounds like the perfect opportunity to showcase my talent. I'll join this tournament and prove that I'm already perfectly perfect! |

(Bede, Hugh, and Wally in town)
Hugh | Ugh! C'mon, how many times do I have to say this?! We're a team, so make sure you keep an eye on what the rest of us are doing! |
Bede | Hmph. I'm the strongest one here, so you two should adjust to ME. Everything will work itself out if you just do that! |
Hugh | Big talk. You're so sure you're stronger than us? Why don't we have a battle and see if that's true, then? |
Bede | Fine. If that's what you need, I'll take you on! |
Wally | S-stop it, you two! We're a team, so we shouldn't be fighting amongst ourselves! Why don't we at least try battling another team first? Come on... Please? |
Bede | Fine. That's acceptable. |
Hugh | Hmph! |
(Transition to Bede, Hugh, and Wally meeting Calem, Hau, and Hop)
Hau | Heya! Thanks for the battle! |
Bede | Oh, we'll have no trouble at all if it's Hop's team we're battling. |
Hop | Why are you always so cheeky, mate? Don't be too surprised when you get taken down by our teamwork! |
(Transition to after the battle)
Hop | All right! We won! |
Bede | I can't believe it... I lost to Hop, of all people?! |
Hugh | Shoot. |
Wally | We lost... |
Hau | Bede and Hugh, you were just barking orders over each other... So it was more like we were battling you one by one, instead of as a team. |
Calem | You two might benefit from supporting each other more as teammates. |
Hugh | Ugh... |
Bede | ... ... ... Like I've already said before, just be a good sport and follow MY lead! |
Hugh | There's no way I'm sitting back and taking orders from you. |
(Bede and Hugh stare each other down, then go in separate ways)
Wally | Ah! Bede! Hugh! Where are you going?! |
(Transition to Team Break watching from behind a corner)
Masked Man (1) | Ohoho... Did you see that battle just now? |
Masked Woman | Yeah. Their team was a mess. They're totally out of sync! |
Masked Man (2) | Their Pokémon might be strong, but we've got nothing to fear from shoddy teamwork like that! |
Masked Man (1) | I know! Let's get them at the tournament! We can use that as an opportunity to snag their Pokémon! |

Bede | Why do I have to go through the hassle of teaming up, anyway... Oh. Marnie... And if my memory serves me correctly, that must be Barry and Gladion. |
Marnie | Oh! Hey, Bede! You gettin' some trainin' done before the tournament? |
Bede | Well...yes, I suppose you could say that. |
Barry | I hear Hugh and Wally are on your team! How's that going? Perfect, I bet! |
Bede | No. Far from it, actually. It's the worst. |
Marnie | Huh? |
Bede | Why did this have to be a team tournament? I would've been fine if I were battling on my own... Teaming up is nothing but a pain in the neck. |
Marnie | Y'know...learnin' how to work together with your teammates can help you get stronger as a Trainer. |
Bede | What? |
Marnie | That's why I'm gonna work hard with my teammates and win this tournament! I've got a feeling I can use what I learn here to make Spikemuth even better! One day, Spikemuth's gonna be the top town in Galar. Just you wait an' see! |
Bede | So...you're shouldering the hopes of your hometown when you battle here? |
Marnie | Of course! It's all for my ultimate dream! I'm also lookin' forward to battling you and your team, Bede. |
Gladion | Yeah. What she said. If you and your teammates are having a fight, you'd better work things out and get back on track. |
Bede | We weren't fighting! |
Gladion | Sure you weren't. Well, we've got to get back to practice. |
Marnie | I'm looking forward to seeing you at the tournament, Bede! |
(Barry, Gladion, and Marnie leave)
Bede | She's trying to get stronger... Not for her own sake but to make her hometown better... I suppose the difference between us is the scope of our ambition. Then...what's a bigger goal I could aim for? |

(Town) | |
Cheren | I see. So that's what happened, huh. |
Hugh | I've never met anyone with such a stuck-up personality in my life. |
Bianca | I guess that's why you two don't mesh. You've always disliked anything that goes against your values. |
Cheren | But you know, Hugh... You didn't enter the tournament just to have a fight with your teammates, right? Sometimes you have to meet the other person in the middle. |
Hugh | But... |
Cheren | A teammate is a peer who stands beside you on equal footing. |
Hugh | ... ... ... |
Cheren | If you're on the same team and have the same goal in mind, why not try to figure out what you can do to support them? |
Bianca | Yeah! I bet you'd have way more fun if you all supported each other! |
Hugh | ... ... ... A peer on equal footing, huh... |
Eventually, the day of the New Stars of Pasio tournament arrived.
Wally | It's finally time for the tournament to start... Bede... Hugh... Oh! |
Bede | ... ... ... Today, I'm here to win. |
Hugh | Of course you are. Everyone gathered today is here to win. |
Bede | But if we're really in this to win... we've got to cooperate as a team. |
Hugh | ... ... ...! |
Bede | Adapting my own battle style to match someone else may end up being a valuable experience. Although for me, it's more so that we can dominate these matches! I refuse to continue losing in such a disgraceful manner. |
Hugh | Well...when you need a hand, I'll cover you. And trust me, we're not gonna lose anymore. |
Bede | I'll hold you to that. Don't even think about slowing us down. |
Hugh | Right back at ya. |
Wally | Oh, thank goodness... |
??? | Haiyaaaaah! |
(Team Break appears) | |
Bede | Wha—?! |
Hugh | What in the world is going on?! |
(Gladion appears) | |
Gladion | You're not getting away! |
(Gladion defeats Team Break)
Masked Man | Darn! |
Wally | Gladion! What's going on? |
Gladion | These punks were gonna take advantage of this tournament. They were planning to wait until we were all tired... then swoop in and steal all of our Pokémon! |
Hugh | What?! |

(Blue battles Team Break)
Blue | What's wrong? If you don't think you can beat me one by one, I'm fine with taking you all on at once! |
Masked Man | This cheeky little— |
??? | Blue! |
(Bede, Hugh, and Wally appear)
Blue | Oh, you guys! What's up? |
Bede | We were worried about you being alone, so we came to check on you. |
Blue | Heh. Is that so? Gotta admit, I feel more secure with you guys here. |
Masked Man | Oh, look who it is! I know all about you and your terrible teamwork! We saw how you lost to everyone else during practice! We'll have no trouble taking your team down... And then all of your Pokémon will be ours for the taking! |
Bede | What did you just say? |
Hugh | So not only did you interfere with our tournament... you were planning on stealing our partners, too?! Just to let you know...you're about to feel my rage! |
Wally | Yeah! I won't just stand by and let you do that, Team Break! |
Blue | Heh. It's about time you all got on the same page. I guess joining the tournament really did teach you a thing or two. |
Bede | Well...I suppose it HAS made me stronger... Just a little bit. But this has nothing to do with the tournament. Since...we had to leave the tournament behind for this. |
Blue | Nah, I don't think you'll have to worry about that. |
Wally | Huh? |
(Barry, Calem, Hau, Hop, Gladion, and Marnie appear)
Hau | We heard about everything from Gladion, so we came to help you out! |
Barry | You Team Break punks better be ready for a good walloping! |
(Silver appears) | |
Silver | I needed to warm up, anyway... Let me join this battle, too. |
Blue | I guess we're ALL on the same page. Right. Let's cut loose on these losers and head right back to the tournament! |
Wally | OK! |
Bede | No need to tell me. |
Hau | Ready, you two? |
Hop | Yep! I can't wait to get this battle started! |
Calem | Let's start off on the right foot so we can win the tournament, too! |
Barry | Come on, you two! We're gonna wipe the floor with these guys and show 'em that we're number one! |
Marnie | Yeah! We'll show you how much better our teamwork has gotten after training together! |
Gladion | Heh. If you refuse to back down, we have no choice but to take you out. |
Blue | Silver. Have you been doing that training I told you about? |
Silver | Hmph. You'll see for yourself once the battle starts! |
Blue | Heh. Then let's see what you've got! |
Wally | Bede! Hugh! |
Hugh | Yeah, we're taking down every last one of these punks! |
Bede | How very unfortunate... It appears you've chosen the wrong team to mess with. |
Trivia
- Revel in Rivalry is the only story event to run twice in the same calendar year.
- The sync pairs that receive a +0.4× or higher reward bonus are the same ones that make up the three complete teams that appear in this event. The only exception is Hugh, who was not playable at the time of this event's debut.
- This is the only event in which Barry & Piplup/Prinplup/Empoleon, Hau & Raichu, Hop & Zamazenta, and Calem & Espurr/Meowstic received a reward bonus higher than +0.2×, as they normally receive only a +0.2× reward bonus due to being obtained through the main story.
