A disruption (Japanese: オジャマ obstacle) is a special icon or effect on a tile found in most Stages in Pokémon Shuffle that are usually meant to hinder the player's ability to do damage to the opposing Pokémon. They are most frequently placed on the stage by the opposing Pokémon, but they may also be a default part of a stage when it begins. There are a number of conditions that may trigger an opposing Pokémon to place disruptions (such as after losing enough HP or after a certain number of moves), but the most common one is having its disruption counter reach zero.
Disruption counter
The disruption counter can be seen in a white bubble labeled "Countdown" on the opposing Pokémon's left side in a stage. The counter decreases after every move the player makes (regardless of whether the stage is move-based or time-based). When it reaches zero, the Pokémon creates a disruption.
The disruption counter can be affected by certain skills and other effects.
- The Calm Down, Mind Zap, and Possession skills will reset the counter to its initial value.
- The Prank skill will randomly change the counter to a number between 1 and its initial value.
- The disruption counter will not decrease when a move is made if...
- The opposing Pokémon is Paralyzed, Asleep, Frozen, or stunned (by a Disruption Delay item or the Astonish, Chill, Constrict, Crushing Step, Daunt, Fascinate, Flap, Power Hug, Sand Sport, Shadow Shock, or Whirlpool skills).
- The first match activates any skill that causes the status effect Paralyzed, Asleep, Frozen, or stunned.
- The first match causes a Pokémon to Mega Evolve.
Types of disruptions
There are a number of ways to remove disruptions. Those that affect multiple types of disruptions are as follows:
- Mega Effects that erase Pokémon will also erase barrier or black-cloud disruptions on targeted Pokémon; Mega Effects that target disruptions can erase other types of disruptions.
- Stabilize(+, ++) skills can remove all types of disruptions, except non-Support Pokémon.
- Swap(+, ++) skills can replace breakable-rock, unbreakable-block, or Coin disruptions with Support Pokémon.
Each type of disruption may also have other methods of removal, detailed below.
Additionally, the Counterattack(+) skills deal increased damage depending on the amount of disruptions currently present.
Breakable-rock
A breakable-rock disruption (Japanese: 壊せる岩 breakable rock) is a square, brown rock that cannot be actively moved by the player but is relatively easy to clear. A breakable-rock disruption will still fall if icons below it are cleared.
Rocks can be cleared if:
- A match is made in any adjacent square. (Diagonals do not count.)
- This includes an unbreakable-block disruption automatically clearing after five moves.
- This does not include matches that remove an adjacent barrier disruption.
- The Rock Break(+, ++) or Rock Shot (α) skills activate.
- Mega Effects activate.
Unbreakable-block
An unbreakable-block disruption (Japanese: 壊せないブロック unbreakable block) is a square, gray metal block that cannot be actively moved by the player and is difficult to clear. An unbreakable-block disruption will still fall if icons below it are cleared.
Blocks can be cleared if:
- Five moves pass after they appear on the field.
- The Block Smash(+, ++), Block Shot, Block Off, or Destruction skills activate.
- Mega Effects activate.
Barrier
A barrier (Japanese: バリア barrier) covers an icon and can affect any tile, including disruption icons. It prevents the icon it covers from moving in any way (including falling), as if it were frozen in place.
The barrier alone (but not the icon it covers) can be cleared if:
- A match is made that includes the Pokémon being covered by the barrier (unless the icon is a Mega Pokémon).
- The Barrier Bash(+, ++), Barrier Shot (Ω), or Barrier Break skills activate.
Both the barrier and the icon it covers can be cleared if:
- The tile is targeted by a Mega Effect (including the Pokémon covered by the barrier being part of a Mega Pokémon match)
- The icon being covered is cleared by any other effect.
- Pokémon-removing skills: Quirky(+, ++), Blindside, Hide and Seek, Eject(+, ++), Shot Out, Dragon Sweep, Eliminate
- Breakable-rock-removing skills: Rock Break(+, ++) Rock Shot (α)
- Unbreakable-block-removing skills: Block Smash(+, ++), Block Shot, Block Off, Destruction
- Breakable-rock and unbreakable-block disruptions that are being covered can still be cleared normally.
On some stages where barriers are a default part of the stage at the start, the barriers will clear away on their own after a certain number of moves if they are still present.
Black-cloud
A black-cloud disruption (Japanese: 黒い雲 black cloud) obscures the visibility of its tile and the icon (if any) that it covers. It can affect any tile. Icons covered by a cloud behave normally and can still be moved or be part of a match.
Clouds can be removed if:
- The Cloud Clear(+, ++) or Cloud Shot skills activate.
- Any skill or Mega Effect activates that erases an icon covered by the cloud. (For example, Quirky(+) or Block Smash(+). See barrier's list above for more.)
A cloud is immune to Mega Effects if the tile it is covering does not have a icon when the effect activates and targets the square it is in.
Coin
A Coin (Japanese: コイン coin) gives the player bonus Coins. It can be moved freely and match with itself the same way Pokémon can. If the stage is completed, any Coins matched will add to the Coin reward at the end of the stage:
- A match of 3 gives +100 Coins.
- A match of 4 gives +300 Coins.
- A match of 5 gives +500 Coins.
- A match of 6 gives +700 Coins.
No other multipliers affect the amount of Coins received.
Non-Support Pokémon
A non-Support Pokémon (Japanese: オジャマのポケモン obstacle Pokémon) is any Pokémon that either does not enter the board normally, or that the player did not choose as a Support Pokémon. They function just like the player's own Support Pokémon.
Non-Support Pokémon may be created a few at a time by the opposing Pokémon, or as part of a set pattern at the beginning of a stage. (In these cases, the inserted Pokémon are unaffected by the player's Support Pokémon.)
For certain stages, one or more non-Support Pokémon may be "forced" on the player from the beginning, as if it were a 5th Support Pokémon: falling into the board like the player's Support Pokémon when other icons are cleared, throughout the entire stage. In this case, if the player has already selected one of these "forced" non-Support Pokémon as a Support Pokémon, the forced Pokémon will be replaced by the first default Support Pokémon for the stage (that is also not already a Support Pokémon).
By default, non-Support Pokémon use the level 1 attack power and default skill of their catchable version. If a non-Support Pokémon has previously been caught by the player, then it will inherit the levels, skills (including swapped skills), and skill levels of the player's own copy.
