Ample space is given over to the value of alms, underlining almsgiving?s dual aspect, the ethical and the economic, the public and the private. On the one hand indeed, the practice of almsgiving concerns good government, the bonum commune; on the other hand, though, it belongs to the works of mercy privately commended to every Christian. The second part of this article means to put in evidence the high conception of almsgiving attributed to St. Francis, who spoke rather of the poor and not of solving the problem of poverty through the practice of allocating funds. In the conclusion a parallel is being hypothesized between the lives of St. Francis and of St. Bernardine of Siena, insofar as both experienced conversion through the act of renouncing their worldly goods and distributing them to the poor.

The Council Fathers were concerned about the identification of the great prostitute of the Apocalypse with the Roman See. This interpretation, as we know, was well weighed by Ubertino de Casale, and the pope, Clement the fifth, preferred to leave the question aside and it disappeared in the final texts of the Council. 1 The recent "double" publication of the Lectura super Apocalipsim 2 now permits us reconsider the question of the conciliar fathers of Vienne regarding the identification between the Church and the great prostitute of Apocalypse. In addition, we can review Olivi's ecclesiology in general. The ecclesiological reflection of Olivi, who was frequently considered an enigmatic person, 3 was the long time object of specific attention from prominent scholars like Yves Congar 4 and Raoul Manselli. 5 During the last fifty years, scholars focused especially on Olivi's reflections about the higher echelons of the ecclesiastical structure, that is, on the Pope and Roman See. I compiled an edition of Olivi's Questiones de Romano pon-1 The answer of Ubertino in his Sanctitatis apostolicae, ed. F. Ehrle, Zur Vorgeschichte des Concils von Vienne, in Archiv für Literatur und Kirchengeschichte [=ALKG] 2 (1886): 377-416. 2 In fact in the same year appeared two different editions of the Lectura: the transcription on line [www.danteolivi.com], done by Paolo Vian, of the manuscript Latin 713 of Bibliothèque Nationale of Paris, that is the most important testimony of the text; and the edition by Warren Lewis, St. Bonaventure University Press, 2015. The following quotations are from the first of these editions, download from www.danteolivi.com in PDF format.
