This territory could become in the near future an urban protected area. Named by specialists the “Capital’s Delta” or the "Delta showroom", it occupies about 180 hectares, inside the 4th district of Bucharest, stretching on a former marsh, suggestively called in the past, the Wailing Valley. During the communist period, the wetlands reclamation and landscaping have begun; thus, from the vast area of the dirty Wailing Valley remained only the Văcăresti Pit, despite the Ceausescu’s intention to transform it into a lake. After 1990, the abandoning of this project has allowed the emergence of a unique ecosystem in the lake basin of the former Văcăresti pit, which now serves about 100 species of birds, reptiles and mammals. Accidentally discovered by photography enthusiasts, biologists, ecologists and geograph...

Volunteer tourism is conceptualized as a form of alternative experience. The study explores the intention of students and young researchers in volunteer tourism activities, seen as alternative experience where the scientific knowledge and leisure activity are associated. The analyse reveals a significant relationship between the research activity and the active participation of volunteer tourism and is better known by the researchers or individuals having different hobbies on sustainable environment issues.

Although these topics have been intensely publicized, the general reaction of the population and, implicitly, of the local communities, towards these signals has been week and isolated. Consequently, the study aims at examining the perception of local Carpathian communities, as actors involved in sustainable development, which are required to assume an active participation in the sustainable management (SFM) of the forests lying in the vicinity of residential areas. In order to accomplish this, an interview was applied in eight pilot areas from the Southern Carpathians. The results reveal that, regardless of education level, the respondents have a deep environmental knowledge about forest ecosystems, a perception in whic...

At the same time, they are subjected by inappropriate development, which affects the supply and demand. Therefore, the study aims to analyze the perception of Generation Y (GY) regarding the tourism attractiveness and competitiveness in the Romanian Carpathians mountain units in order to identify a benchmarking of directions needed to improve the development of these destinations. The research is based on the survey method, applied to a sample of Millennial(s)/GY, processed in SPSSv.17 and evaluation using aggregate indexes. The results show that young tourists consider the attractiveness to be high for tourist resources and satisfactory for facilities. Performance of their experiences is influenced by outdoor relaxation, photos, and trekking activities. Despite some lacks regarding the winter sports facilities, accommodation, GY is still interested to visit or revisit different mountain units. Thus, the stakeholders must take in consideration the issues of facilities for winter sports, walk, mountain bike, and races events, to reshape and adapt all aspects related to the mobility, accommodation, promotion and quality of experiences in the Carpathian Mountains to meet much more to GY's expectations.

This paper aims to identify possible ecological restoration models for the Danube floodplain according to the principles of sustainable development and the needs of the population living and working here. The research methodology included direct field observation, GIS techniques, and the survey method. The analysis proved the need for achieving the ecological restoration of this area while ensuring a harmonious relationship between nature and economic activities. After evaluating the views of local decision-making actors, different groups of stakeholders with divergent opinions emerged. While owners of agricultural holdings and agriculture experts pleaded for maintaining the status quo, NGOs voted for complete ecological restoration, and landowners with small farms, local authorities’ representat...

The main research methods employed for this study were observation, survey and cartographic method, which made use of GIS techniques. A map with the current spatial distribution of the forest belt fragments overlapping the initial vegetation was accomplished. The investigation has found that these patches cover small areas lying in the immediate vicinity of the D buleni town. We suggest that in order to mitigate the impact of climatic modifications and to prevent land degradation the reconstruction of forest protection belts created between 1970 and 1980 is a must, in as much as in their present condition they can no longer protect the hydrotechnical improvements and the lands. However, project implementation is hindered by the lack of cadastre and funds. At the same time, the population and the landowners in the area need to be explained the importance of forest protection belts for the improvement of environment and living conditions, for the gradual diminishing of drought effects and for the enhancement of agricultural production. Another problem that must necessarily be settled is the development of a methodology for granting compensations to those landowners who agree to change the use of their agricultural lands so as to allow the creation of forest protection belts.

In fact, some areas are appropriate to this. One of them is the Carpathian area, where a quarter of the Romanian small towns exist. These settlements are still trying to adapt to the market economy hence many of them, as former mono-industrial centers, have shrank their activities and try to subscribe in the new economic landscape. In the context of a great tourism potential given by the Carpathians resources and benefiting by urban development, few environmental changes analyzed through tourism potential indicator (Tp), urban development indicator (UDI), environmental change indicator (EChI), many of the mountainous small towns can successfully revive through tourism development. Their good economic, urban and environmental state influences the surroundings, rural area and their communities' wellbeing; hence their revival through tourism may increase the mountain economy.

The results show an increase of tourist demand for the Carpathian destinations in the framework of tourist establishments' structure changes, the spreading of agri-tourism, a need for improvement of accommodation services quality according to the visitors' profile. Tourism development, revealed by visitors' flows, has some similarities with the perception of tourists. The tourists' views can, with several limits, be considered as a barometer in tourism research and a useful instrument in building tourism offers.

In the town of Drăgăneşti-Olt, due to the involvement of local authorities and the Boianu Plain Museum, a Gumelniţa Culture tell site was reconstructed. The study aims to establish if this unique Romanian archaeo-park can build the cultural identity of the town, assuring the foundation for building a local tourism image. Methods used were based on field research and survey as a tool to analyse people’s perception. The data was processed in QSR NVivo 10. The archaeo-park is currently unique in Romania and the several reconstructed pile dwellings depict the living conditions of the Neolithic era. Each detail is based on the rigorous archaeological research and discoveries in the nearby tell, also sharing common features and elements with similar settlements in Eu...
