Coming out, being out: Reconciling loss and hatred in becoming whole

Loss and hatred are two powerful emotions that are ubiquitous phenomena woven into the fabric of ... more Loss and hatred are two powerful emotions that are ubiquitous phenomena woven into the fabric of coming out and being out. Both exist in an interpersonal matrix where being out carries the risk of loss of connection and mutuality with important others. This loss can result in the internalization of one's identity as repellent and inferior, a shamed subjectivity. The path to being a healthy, integrated, and openly gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender (lgbt) person is examined theoretically and clinically, with transferential and countertransferential material used to dislodge the internalized belief that being hated is deserved.

Coming out in the classroom can impact both the teaching and learning process. The decision to come out to my students when I began teaching a class on sexual orientation was stressful and complicated. It was not a spontaneous revelation, but a conscious and deliberate choice. In retrospect, it was one of the most important decisions I have made in my teaching career and one I have never regretted. Teaching and learning are companions; I and my students have learned much from my stating, ‘I am a lesbian’ in the classroom.

Despite maintaining that we should be tolerant and respectful of those with different opinions and that we should openly debate our “enemy,” she repeatedly argues that those who disagree with her are necessarily members of the herd, engaged in groupthink. Are practices such as genital cutting, arranged marriage, polygyny, and veiling by definition misogynistic and oppressive? Indeed, these are very important issues that we should sort out and act on, but Chesler’s vitriolic anti-Islam rhetoric obfuscates this fact. Chesler contends that the “Islamization” of that region and Europe is oppressing women. Most major Islam scholars, however, point out that it is patriarchal society and not Islam or the Qu’ran that is responsible for atrocities such as genital cutting and child marriage. Indeed, the Qu’ran is remarkably egalitarian in comparison to other major religious texts (Aslan, 2005). As for the jihad movement within Islam, it consists of a minority of Muslims and should not be confused with mainstream Muslim beliefs. One chapter of the text, “My Afghan Captivity,” tells the story of her early marriage to an Afghan man and her brief stay in Afghanistan with him and his family. She recounts how her U. S. passport was confiscated, her freedom stripped, her social world eliminated, her intellect devalued, and her marriage destroyed. It is a moving chapter that adds a new dimension to the work. In later chapters, Chesler does a commendable job of describing the types of human rights violations to which Muslim women are subjected. Her discussion of actual cases of rape, honor killing, and other violent acts against women is overwhelming and disturbing. By bearing witness to these accounts of what Chesler calls gender apartheid, she makes a strong case for action. It is clear that we must do something to protect women’s freedom, though many may disagree with Chesler’s contention that recent wars in the Middle East are part of that solution. What is missing from these descriptions is a diversity of representations of Muslim women, which may leave a reader seeking a deeper or more comprehensive understanding of women in Islam (see, e.g., Brooks, 1995). Despite the wealth of testimonies and case stories, there is little to no social scientific evidence or psychological theory in this work. For the most part, this seems appropriate. There are times, however, when evidence from social psychology could be used to support her claims. In general, I found this text highly readable and engaging, but also provocative and a bit alienating. As a (third-wave) feminist, I cannot help but find Chesler’s attack on our movement to be offensive and uninformed. Feminism is not dead; it is just evolved. Chesler’s own evolution from Women and Madness, published in 1972, has taken an interesting and unexpected path to arrive at The Death of Feminism. The work is intended to be a call to action, which is much needed. That her religious and political beliefs color her conclusions is to be expected, but not overlooked. I encourage those who are interested in global feminist issues and cultural feminism to read this work because, beneath the anti-Islam and Zionist rhetoric, Chesler discusses a significant issue that we all must confront.

I am frequently reminded of Bob Dylan's 1964 song "The Times They Are A-Changing" whenever I have... more I am frequently reminded of Bob Dylan's 1964 song "The Times They Are A-Changing" whenever I have a patient born after 1980 or a conversation with my six-year-old son. At times the world they exist in seems so different from my own. Recently a blank MS Word document was up on my computer monitor and my son asked, "What's that?" I replied, "A piece of paper." He looked at me totally perplexed, as if I had lost my mind. In that moment, I realized my answer reflected what the screen represented to me, rather than what it was, which was a blank document on my computer desktop. It does not become paper, a page, until printed. For me, the boundary was blurred: The desktop was the paper; for my son, the desktop and the page would always be distinctly different. The object being represented had shifted, and we had a different frame of reference. He will never know a world without computers, whereas life before computers may become a reference point for those of us born in the first six decades of the twentieth century. In speaking with my patients who are in their teens and twenties, I see the paradigm shift in action, the different relationships constructed through different mediums. There are multiple possibilities of self, as well as instant access to others, never being out of touch-yet at times communication exists in a distant, abstract space, rather than a tangible space. My interest in the emerging phenomenon of computerdriven identities is fueled by my clinical work. My patients introduced me to avenues and realms of being that I had not previously considered. I was learning about a world I was not a part of, and hearing a language I did not speak. Slowly my suspicions
