G. Agamben and the Biopolitical Understanding of the Shoah

The Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, in his Homo Sacer-cycle, has developed a new paradigm fo... more The Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, in his Homo Sacer-cycle, has developed a new paradigm for thinking the Shoah. Departing from Michel Foucault’s biopolitical thought, he argues that modern political power is made possible by the helix-structure of sovereign power and homo sacer. Sovereign power is situated at the threshold of the prevailing juridico-political order and can, in a state of exception, violently suspend or establish the law. In this decision, homo sacer is legally excluded from the law. When the state of exception is made general, the law of sovereignty governs all life and everyone becomes homo sacer. This happened concretely in the Shoah. In the concentration camps, the Muselmann is produced. During the Shoah by Bullet, as happened in Lithuania, the generalised sovereign biopolitics turns into radical thanatopolitics.

The reviled Jewish-Russian war correspondent Vasily Grossman wrote a masterful novel Life and Fat... more The reviled Jewish-Russian war correspondent Vasily Grossman wrote a masterful novel Life and Fateabout the historical battle of Stalingrad (1943), in which he sharply fillets both the Nazi and Stalinist forms of terror in a literary style. The great ideas about society lead to abuse of power and to oppression. Against the common ideals, Grossman argues for a form of small goodness that takes place on the concrete intersubjective plane. In this article, I elucidate the literary ideas of Grossman by confronting them with analogous philosophical approaches. First of all, the connection between modern rationality and a concentration camp is discussed. Both are accompanied by a form of thoughtlessness. The different forms of small goodness are then analyzed: the refusal to be complicit, the criticism of the great ideologies, the self-sacrifice, the deviation from the command, and the usual ethical norms. Our contribution investigates the question whether is it possible to apply constructionist method... more Our contribution investigates the question whether is it possible to apply constructionist methods of education in teaching humanities with fictional films. From a more sceptical viewpoint one could argue, that this is not possible for several reasons. The article starts the discussion, suggests some arguments for justification of positive answer and reveals several different possible experiences of including constructionism in teaching humanities with fictional films. The theoretical basis for these approaches are the pragmatic pedagogy of John Dewey, the Deleuzean theory of cinema and Paul Ricouer's theory of personal identity. The article deals with the several different possible experiences of including constructive strategies teaching humanities with films.

De bladzijden of de pellicule dragen krachtige betekenissen in zich. Kunstminnaars spreken over de "uitgestelde herkenning." Een fragment sluimert schijnbaar spoorloos in het geheugen. Tot het op een genadevol ogenblik openbloeit. De intrigerende prent Mar Adentro van de Spaanse cineast Alejandro Amenabar is een voorbeeld. Ramon Sampedro kijkt als jongeman van op een rotsklip naar een zonnende jonge vrouw en duikt in de ondiepe zee. Hij botst op de bodem en breekt zijn nekwervels. Enkele decennia later worstelt hij met de zin van zijn leven en bereidt zijn dood voor. Hoewel het hoofdthema van de film leidt naar een discussie over de aanvaardbaarheid van euthanasie bij de niet-terminale, tetraplege patiënten, richten we de aandacht op twee zijdelingse fragmenten.

Elke organisatie gaat prat op een deontologische code,; ethische llabels worden gebruikt als kwaliteitsnorm en ethische overtredingen blijken plots beroepsfouten te zijn. Ook in de gezondheidszorg is de aandacht voor de ethiek zeer sterk aanwezig. 1 Enerzijds zijn er de grote ethische problemen in verband met het levenseinde zoals euthanasie, pijnbestrijding, palliatieve sedatie, stopzetten van therapieën of, medische hulp bij zelfdoding. Omtrent het levensbegin stelt men zich vragen over de gevolgen van prenatale diagnose, genetische screening, selectieve abortus, experimenten op embryo's (Vanneste, 2004). Anderzijds zijn er de vragen van de dagelijkse zorg zoals de maaltijdzorg, de hygiënische zorg, de rouwbegeleiding of het gebruik van vrijheidsbeperkende maatregelen.. De eerste reeks vragen heeft te maken met de toepassing van een aantal principes bij keuzes die vaak het karakter van een dilemma hebben. Men moet al dan niet voor een handeling kiezen en dit heeft duidelijke gevolgen. Waarden, principes en normen spelen hier een belangrijke rol. 2 De tweede reeks vragen heeft eerder betrekking op de ethische kwaliteit van de dagelijkse zorg. Enigszins eenvoudig zou men kunnen stellen dat de ethisch goede zorg een intrinsieke kwaliteit is van de goede zorg. Men kan dan ook spreken van een virtuositeit binnen het medische en verpleegkundige handelen of van een excellente zorg. De goede zorg is de deugdelijke zorg. 3 De Latijnse term virtus (waarvan 'virtuositeit' is afgeleid) duidt de innerlijke houding of attitude aan van de persoon die zijn taak op een excellente wijze vervult. In dit artikel presenteer ik het ethische denkkader van het personalisme dat kan gebruikt worden om de eerste groep ethische problemen bespreekbaar te maken.

The deepest truth of subjectivity can be found in an alterity that calls for a socio-political responsibility. The political implications are rooted in different layers of Levinas’s thought. In his Talmudic comments, Levinas questions the reality of war as the truth of politics. But his explorations of subjectivity, ethical relationality and society allow to understand different political options such as contract theory (responsibility in the first person), liberation philosophy and human rights (responsibility in the second person) and the necessity of building a just society (ethics in the third person). Dealing with residents' sexual longings and behaviour is extremely difficult, putting a burden on the caregivers as well as on the residents themselves and their relatives. The parties in question often do not know how to react when residents express themselves sexually. The overall aim of this article is to provide a number of clinical-ethical considerations addressing the following question: 'How can expressions of intimacy and sexuality by residents with dementia be dealt with in an ethically responsible way?'
