IPA /i/ or "long e"

The sound /i/ in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is called the "long 'e'" in American English K-12 instruction. It is distinct from the letter "i" and the letter "e." The phonetic alphabet is about SOUNDS, which can be represented with many different letters. We write the sound /i/ with the letters "i," "ie," "ei," "e," "ee," "ea," "y," and "ey."
