Handmade Scottish Whisky Cups
Earthenware cups by ceramicist Joshua Williams bring an added dose of pleasure to the already pleasurable pursuit of drinking whisky. There’s a tactile warmth in ceramic that gives a very different experience on the lips compared to drinking from glass.
Take the biscuit
A wonderfully domestic beast with enormous character, the lidded jar is perfect for storing all manner of goods that benefit from being housed together, slightly out of sight and immediate reach. Haribo falls into this category in our household. Joshua Williams’s freehand with form, texture and colour, turns this practical piece of tableware into an archetypal beauty of heirloom quality. Hands will reach into it for decades.
Wild Clay boxes by Viv Lee and Jonathan Wade
“These boxes are each made from wild clay that we have found ourselves. The clay has literally been taken from the ground and used in its natural state, unprocessed. We are interested in minimal intervention to preserve the integrity of the material so it speaks as loudly as it can about the place where it came from. It is less about material transformation and more about preservation.” Viv Lee and Jonathan Wade
Shetland Wooden Creepies
The Creepie is a favourite vernacular item of furniture from Orcadian and Shetland culture, found today throughout Scotland. “Creepie” means “to stoop” in Old Scots, and Creepies were used for any task that required being low, from milking cows to stirring porridge, children’s seats, foot rests and stepping stools.
The Grit and The Glamour
We have invited twenty one Scottish makers to respond with a work that expresses The Grit and The Glamour in their own impression. The results are supersized and quiet, riotous and jarring, kitsch and precious, precise and elusive, fastidious and fragile.
Pepper pepper mills by Marc Sweeney
“This is a pepper mill made from bio-resin filled with peppercorns. The canny aspect of the mill’s design is the fact that it is cast and not milled, so there is barely any waste material. I make a wax plug, which melts to create the cavity that holds the grinding mechanism. I feel there’s a duty as a designer to waste as little as possible.” Marc Sweeney
Viv Lee Sympoiesis Vessel - NO.90
Viv Lee’s coil built stoneware vessels have an otherworldly, anthropomorphic beauty. The Glasgow-based ceramicist speaks about her interest in pre-historic forms, a deep spiritual connection to earth and the body, and the sensory experiences and ephemera gathered from life in the deep time of the Scottish wild. These influences filter into Lee’s subconscious allowing her intuitive process of coiling and pinching to take over. The individual forms that emerge feel compelling, intimate and univers
Laurence Veitch Vernacular Collection - Long Side Table
Laurence Veitch graduated last year from the Chippendale International School of Furniture in East Lothian. His Vernacular collection marks him out as a designer maker of great skill and sensitivity. The collection comprises two side tables, a whatnot and a longer low table (same height as the side tables), all with tops made from Scottish oak, fumed with ammonia to give them their darker character. The tapered legs are hand-turned from Scottish Olive Ash, stained with Indian ink. Laurence descr
