Scholars tackled the idea from an array of academic standpoints, ranging from Jacques Lacan's work in psychoanalysis, Simone de Beauvoir's contribution in gender studies, and -probably most significantlydiscourses on imperialism highlighted in Edward Saïd's Orientalism and setting the stage for postcolonial studies. Moreover, many artists have joined in the discussion by critiquing the apparent distinctions between Us and Them, or Self and Other. In a similar manner, European Cinema has in the past few decades opened an important conversation concerning what it means to be European -a debate continually reassessed due to socio-political changes. By examining this sense of identity, artists and filmmakers alike have aroused in their works inevitable questions regarding the representation of the Other in our multicultural society.
