This paper explores the uses of history that scholars, journalists, and writers activate to groun... more This paper explores the uses of history that scholars, journalists, and writers activate to ground their critique on the identity of "Mexico". By reviewing five pieces of contemporary scholarship on Mexico, I describe a set of patterns for the use of temporal metaphors which tend to do away with historical difference and turn historical discourse into an esthetic heuristic element.
