Drug trafficking and Violence in Mexico

War on Drugs in Mexico " 43 Missing students " , is a headline that to the unknowing eye looks li... more War on Drugs in Mexico " 43 Missing students " , is a headline that to the unknowing eye looks like an anomaly. However, to those suffering through this, it's an event that is unfortunately commonplace. The 43 students of the rural teaching school of Ayotzinapa went missing from the town of Iguala on the 26 th of September last year. They still haven't been found and most believe would never be found. This incident did grasp a lot of attention from the international media, but the whole story was never told. If one barely scratches the surface one finds that such incidents are neither unprecedented nor are they uncommon. Its ropes are blatantly attached to the " Mexican war on drugs ". A " War " that was started by the former president Felipe Calderon, it's a war that most believe has been lost. The initiative against drug trafficking was taken by Calderon in 2006 and even though at first glance it seems like something noble it has had devastating effects on the Mexican population especially those who live on the fringes of the society. Since the day the war on drugs was declared violence in Mexico has only escalated. 85,000 people have been killed since 2006, some believe the true number to be as high as 120,000. However, this staggering number cannot be attributed to just the drug cartels. As most civilians living in regions like Guerrero, Acapulco, Chihuahua wold lament, the killings are a game between the drug cartels and the Military and the Police. Those still alive to tell the tale, say that the military is as brutal as the drug cartels. The drug cartels target those belonging to indigenous tribes mostly for their land, to acquire more land to grow more poppy, the priced plant that gives out opium and later they are targeted by the military on the suspicion of being a part of the drug cartels or are accused of being anti-state elements or more commonly called the guerrillas. As the locals keep swinging between a rock and a hard place, the drug cartels only seem to grow. The crackdown on drug trafficking has been a failure and one of the biggest reasons for that is the rampant and embedded corruption in the societal infrastructure of Mexico. The second reason is the astounding amount of money that backs the drug trafficking industry which is roughly $30 billion per annum. The number and the intensity of drug cartels has only increased since 2006, the Sinaloa Cartel is the largest organised crime unit in the world, and there are numerous others like the Juarez cartel , the Tijuana Cartel and the newest ones are the Knights Templars. Each more gruesome that the other. However, Mexico has a history of drug cartels and trafficking and never has it been so bloody. Most experts have a theory to explain this. PRI or the Institutional Revolutionary Party controlled Mexico for seventy one years and in those years built strong ties with the Drug Cartels, basing itself on patronage, power and most of all profits. The money being raked in by the cartels was seen as necessary for stability of the federal government and for the financial solvency of the state. However, till recently drug trafficking had been incorporated into the PRI-corporate infrastructure. It was the drug traffickers who were manipulated by those in power in lieu of protection and safe-passage. A prime example of this patron-client relationship would be the DFS or the Direccion Federal de Seguridad. The DFS was an organisation modelled after the CIA to destroy Drug Trafficking in Mexico, instead it became one of its biggest facilitators,
