The gap between the rich and the poor countries enabling the economically advanced countries to have more privileges over the developing nations, gave rise to endless debates over the nature of the International Economic System. The struggle of the developing countries (referred as South) to bridge the gap between the ‘rich and the poor’ nations found expression through various movements and coalitions

His critique of Orientalism changes the Orientalist discourses in how Islam has been perceived, constructed, imagined and distorted in its representation with discernible facts in the Foucauldian sense with a ‘regulated system of thought.’

In the context of the 'Islamic world,' how does Islam as a religion contemplates the idea of Din, Duniya and Daulat as a cosmopolitan view in its own consciousness and worldliness beyond the meta-narratives of Islamic fundamentalism on the one hand and Islamophobia on the other is an important inquiry. The relics of this mentality are still present in academia that shape the regressive "clash of civilizations." In such a discursive tradition of orthodox understanding on Islam in the aftermath of September 2001 Predictably, the rash of pseudo-explanations of Islamic extremism, Islamic fundamentalism, Islamic theology, Islamic irrationalism. But such a possibility can't be achieved until a proper agency is identified to overcome the colonial and post-colonial experiences. The critical task is to challenge the vast generalization project by retrieving the pre-colonial condition of cosmopolitan worldliness which Muslims historically experienced through its own great tradition of scientific vigour, philosophy and aesthetic imagination. The paper aims to revisit Islamic history and its multiple stands of cultural diversities through the lens of Cosmopolitanism. Debating Islam from the cosmopolitan lens can be an authentic response to malcontents of the western modernity which dominates the notion of universalism from own standpoint. Therefore, an expansion of non-western international relations without falling into the trap of 'Orientalism in reverse' can be made through the idea of cosmopolitanism.

With the rise of China and the emergence of Russia in the major parts of the world, multipolarity is the new reality in the international system. The role of the US as a most formidable power in the Middle East, that was central to its foreign policy, is witnessing a new shift: the rebalancing of US power after the Arab Uprising. The US has been the provider of political, social and financial stability of the Arab world. Another key issue is the growing rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran that brought the region into chaos. In this sphere, where does the EU stand? The central focus of this proposed study is to know: is the EU a relevant power amidst the rebalancing of power dynamics in the Middle East in general? The challenges for the EU as a relevant power are huge, considering its relation with the Middle East under the shadow of the United States. There are many challenges for the EU and this paper would aim to unravel them both at the macro and micro-levels. The paper aims to discuss the challenges for the EU on three dimensions: Political, Economic and Security. As the EU carries its institutional approach in forming any alliance, the paper would use the constructivist approach in understanding the relations between the EU and the Arab world and also critically examine the EU's European Neighbourhood Policy.

Historically, one can argue that religion and culture have played a historical role in fostering India's relationship with its South East neighbours. The works of R C Mazumdar, who debunked Western scholarship on the meaning of 'Hindu colonies', finds culture over ideological factors in shaping ancient India's civilisational influence in the region. The Indian cultural influence (shaped by Hinduism and Buddhism) has been a defining force in India's 'eastern strategy' in the neighbourhood foreign policy. The idea behind Panchamrit (five themes: "Samman-dignity and honour; samvad-greater engagement and dialogue; samriddhi-shared prosperity; Suraksha-regional and global security; and Sanskriti evam sabhyata-cultural and civilisational linkages"), the new core foundation of India's foreign policy, is shifting its gear from the Panchsheel project of Nehruvian vision of India's foreign policy. This paper discusses the three-factor influence on India's diplomatic linkages with SouthEast Asia. Firstly, it will dwell upon how civilisational linkages have shaped India's 'Act East policy' towards SouthEast Asia. Secondly, culture and religion have become a non-coercive soft-power strategy in India's relations with the region. Thirdly, the projection of the civilisational aspect (both religion and cultural significance) redefines Indian diplomacy as a forceful pragmatist idea in SouthEast Asia against the bordered notion of state interest. Therefore, it critically inquires whether it has achieved any meaningful diplomatic success in the anarchic international system.

The new edition also includes a chapter that charts the economy of the Gulf States and in particular the phenomenal growth of oil economies. The authors make a considerable contribution to the field of Middle East studies and focus on the connections between economics, politics, and the society, which are obscured in standard analyses. According to the book, the first and most immediate challenge is economic stabilization to avoid a meltdown, which would further complicate the fragile political process. It recommends building a package of measures that would reduce expenditures, raise revenues, and command some minimum level of popular support that is a sticky endeavor even in the best of circumstances. The authors argue that the second priority area should be modernization of state and the rehabilitation of public services, especially health, education, and social protection. Furthermore, the need to improve the business environment and job creation has been emphasized. Based on historical analysis, it has been argued that the policy choices for the Arab countries are limited, given the failure of both socialism and state capitalism. Although it is otherwise an excellent and comprehensive text, the book has certain shortcomings. The authors should have included one chapter on the role of women in economy and their social status. A serious lacuna is that the book ignores the regional disparity, especially because the sociopolitical and economic differences that exist between various subregions. Nonetheless, the book is recommended to readers interested in the subject especially for graduate students of political economy in Middle East. The book accomplishes what it intends to do and provides a concise examination of political economy of the Middle East.

India’s growth story has multiple challenges due to its significant dependence on energy needs: one-fourth of India’s 1.2 billion people still have insufficient access to electricity. This book is not just about heaps of data on India’s economy and its energy requirements but an acute understanding of many dimensions of India’s current growth story and its future stakes.
