Groundwater contaminations based on the release and transportation of leachate from municipal sol... more Groundwater contaminations based on the release and transportation of leachate from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills are a potential hazard to the ecosystem and its inhabitants. In this study, nine chemical compositions of groundwater quality were collected and analysed from 16 monitoring wells and two ponds around the Diaoyushan MSW landfill in the north of Jiangsu Province, China. Multiple analyses were performed to assess the redox conditions and the groundwater environment. It was indicated that the landfill was in a low and stable biodegradability phase, and the most influential phase was the initial stage of the landfill site; the leachate leakage was the principal pollution source (49.18%) for the local groundwater environment. Artificial drainage of Dongdasha village expanded the contaminant plume scopes and deteriorated water quality further. The polluted groundwater area was provided with high concentrations of total hardness, Cl − , SO 4 2− , total dissolved solids (TDS) and Pb.

Th... more Continuously high use of fossil fuels may lead scarcity of these energy sources in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to develop renewable energy to ensure its availability. One of the efforts in the development of renewable energy and the aims of this study is to examine the utilization Fly Ash (FA), Bottom Ash (BA) combined biomass sludge of Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and municipal solid waste) materials as an alternative energy source (briquette raw materials) for co-firing in textile industry boilers. Briquettes were made with a composition of 60% FABA and 40% biomass which were then varied in composition. The parameters measured were proximate, calorific value, and shatter index. The feasibility test of briquettes was carried out using a Tanner diagram, where all briquettes made can be burned as fuel. Optimum briquettes quality was measured based on the criteria according to the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 06/2021. The results showed that the composition of three briquettes that had optimum quality and met the criteria were briquettes with composition 10%FA:50%BA:40%Biomass (variation of WWTP sludge and biomass

This study also determines the effect of pH and stirring speed on the efficiency of bottom ash in the adsorption of color and COD. Bottom ash was ground and sieved by 100 mesh sieves and was activated by hydrochloric acid 2%. The experiments were conducted at pH variations of 6, 8, 10; contact time variations of 30, 60, and 90 minutes; and stirring speeds of 30 and 60 rpm. The most effective adsorption by non-activated adsorbents occurred at the combination of pH six and stirring speed of 60 rpm with the removal efficiency for color 66.30% at a contact time of 90 minutes and for COD 31.55% at a contact time of 30 minutes. While for activated adsorbent, the highest removal for color (77.44%) and COD removal (40.54%) were at pH 6, stirring speed 30 rpm, contact time 30 minutes. The bottom ash was potentially used as an adsorbent for treating wastewater containing high concentrations of color and COD.

In addition, the environmental problems related to improper plastic waste have become progressively concerning. Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most intriguing biopolymers for the fabrication of biodegradable plastic. More importantly, PLA has sharply increased interest in producing its monomer, lactic acid (LA). Considering the expensive cost of LA production, exploring the potential of refined kappa-carrageenan (RKC) as a low-cost substrate is crucial. This work aimed to study RKC hydrolysate’s effect (20g L−1) on lactic acid production. A set of parameters were evaluated, including lactic acid content by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, optimum bacterial growth, and reducing sugar content. The results showed that by utilizing RKC as the substrate, the growth of Lactobacillus plantarum reached its maximum within 24 hours of fermentation. The reduced sugar content ...

However, seaweed fermentation into lactic acid is not yet usually. Seaweed fermentation has outstanding potential because it has the most abundant polysaccharides compared to other sources. This research aims to synthesize lactic acid by fermentation using a single culture of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) and two substrates, namely seaweed flour and refined salt Kappa-Carrageenan (RKC). Lactic acid was analyzed by fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and its concentration was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The proximate analysis showed that crude Fiber and starch levels in seaweed are 25.37% and 14.66% (w/w) and also in RKC are 16.45% and 1.07% (w/w), respectively. The highest reducing sugar was attained at H2SO4 2% (w/w), which were 51,184 mg/L in RKC and 24,824 mg/L in seaweed flour. Based on FT-IR data, lactic acid characteristic signals were found at broadband approximately ...

There are three very potential aquifer layers found in this basin i.e. shallow aquifers, upper confined aquifers, and lower confined aquifers bounded by several aquitard. High economic and development activities cause high vulnerability to polluted aquifers such as nutrients. Previous research mentioned the presence of nutrients in groundwater in urban areas can be caused by high anthropogenic activity. Nutrient contamination in groundwater can be a threat to ecosystems in coastal areas. The purpose of this paper is to understand nutrient transport patterns through groundwater hydrogeology systems in the Jakarta groundwater basin, so that the amount of groundwater contribution to the nutrient flux in the Jakarta bay can be estimated. To get the transport nutrient model, QSWATMOD tools in QGIS Software were used. The parameters used ...

Climate variability affects changes in groundwater chemistry on small islands. Pari Island is one such small island, located in Indonesia, with an area of 41.32 ha and a population of 1,441. This study aims to assess the vulnerability of groundwater quality to climate variability based on observations from Pari Island, including the in uence of tourism on groundwater. The study used traditional hydrochemistry analysis methods (Piper, Durof, Scholler, and Gibb's diagrams), a questionnaire survey, and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) analysis. The results indicate a strong correlation between SPEI-2 and the total dissolved solid content of groundwater, demonstrating that twomonthly interval precipitation has an impact on groundwater quality. The hydro chemical analysis of samples taken from dug wells shows that, geographically, the in uence of climate variability on Pari Island weakened from west to east, corresponding to patterns related to the direction of the monsoon winds of tropical Indonesia. Increased tourism worsened groundwater vulnerability due to increased water demand and resultant wastewater load.

We realized that the use of coal had caused pollution, including air pollution from coal-burning processing and water and soil pollution from the coal solid waste (fly ash and bottom ash), which not be appropriately managed. This study aims to assess the beneficiary of utilizing the unburnt carbon as co-firing in boiler industrial compared with air emission impact—the unburnt carbon mixed with municipal solid waste treated firstly to be briquette. The briquette was called Biomass Coal Fuel (BCF), and it was used as coal substitution of 10-15%. The cost of air pollution calculation referred to the Ministry Environmental Regulation Number 13 of 2011. We have compared the cost of air pollution between before and after BCF substitution. Meanwhile, the beneficiaries were calculated from the reduction of coal consumption. The result showed that emiss...
Understanding the characteristics of low flows over time is critical to sustainable water resourc... more Understanding the characteristics of low flows over time is critical to sustainable water resource management in Bintan, a small tropical island in Indonesia. Low flows are driven by precipitation and controlled by the soil and geological parameters of a catchment. A method that integrated the Standardized Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and the calculated total runoff (TRO) was developed in order to analyze the change in low-flow intensity over time. This method included steps for the selection of an appropriate SPEI timescale and the development of low-flow intensity classes based on the TRO, and was used to assess the trend in low-flow intensity change in Bintan Island for 1981–2020 and the impact of climate change on low-flow intensity for 2031–2070. The results showed that low-flow intensity in the second half of the 1981–2020 period was 45% less than in the first half, with an estimated increase in low-flow volume of 405 mm (22.4%). The climate-change projection ...
