Princess and the Pea cake and birthday party games (or Prince, as the case may be)

My "Princess and the Pea" cake (or, actually, Prince and the Pea) was not nearly as fancy as some of the others I saw on the internet, but was both fancier & easier than I'd expected. This is to encourage some of you other less-than-professional cake makers out there! I used 2 cakes made in 4 loaf pans; 2 containers of frosting; melted chocolate chips for the headboard & footboard; marshmallow fondant for the pillow, blanket, & crown; and a Nilla Wafer for the prince's head.

Wish I had a better picture of this part, but my husband rigged up the piece de resistance: a chandelier hanging over the bed for the birthday candles! This was made of a wire coat hanger and two cardboard disks covered with tin foil. (The candles went through holes in the top disk and were melted onto the bottom disk. One end of the hanger was folded and taped under the bottom disk; the other end of the hanger is folded into a triangle underneath the cutting board.)
Who doesn't dig floating fire?
By the way, this was for my son's 7th birthday party at a local theater showing "Princess and the Pea." Boys & girls both loved it - not a single snicker about princesses. We had two themed games. Here, the unfortunately named "Pin the Pea Under the Mattress." (Everybody else tried to put green stickers under the bed; my son put a photo of himself as prince on top.)
In the kids' favorite game -- invented by my son -- we hid a green ball under one of two stacks of pillows. Each child got to sit on both stacks and try to guess which had the pea. If the child guessed right, we added another pillow to each stack. Some kids got up to five pillows before they guessed wrong.

So, here come the inspirations. I borrowed bits and pieces of ideas from various web sites. The head board and foot board, which look so hard, were actually not hard at all using the templates this kind cake-maker posted.
The Princess & the Pea
This one was my very favorite of the many wonderful cakes I saw, but completely out of my league!
The Princess and the Pea Cake
This baker had used the same headboard & footboard templates with a different style of icing, which gave me a sense of how much the look could vary.

Inspired by this one, I also made a ladder, using the piped melted chocolate technique again.
Make Your Own Marshmallow Fondant With Only 3 Ingredients
Used this simple marshmallow recipe for my first foray into fondant. Found it slightly challenging (perhaps because I used kosher marshmallows which don't have quite the same consistency) but added a little vegetable oil & warmed it in the microwave to loosen it each time it got too stiff. I used the fondant only for the pillow, blanket, & crown. Probably could have managed a fondant prince, but kept it simple & went with a Nilla Wafer head sticking up out of the blanket.
