The growth of engineering education research (EER) as a research discipline has led, amongst othe... more The growth of engineering education research (EER) as a research discipline has led, amongst other things, to an increase in dedicated academic departments and degree programmes. The recently introduced MSc Engineering and Education at University College London is one such example. Current research suggests that the transition from professional practice and undergraduate disciplinary education to graduate level research and education is often accompanied by experiences of dissonance and discomfort. However, research on the necessary transformational learning pedagogies to support students undergoing this transition is still in its infancy. This study seeks to address this research gap.

Work practices and learning are entangled processes that operate differently in each workplace. C... more Work practices and learning are entangled processes that operate differently in each workplace. Central factors producing this diversity are the informal, social and affective cultures facilitated and supported in each workplace. Recent research findings further suggest that these informal modes of workplace practice are critical for how people in these organisations learn, and for their capacity to innovate and adapt to changes in their business environment. Lockdowns implemented because of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which many organisations and individuals have had to embrace remote working using digital devices, software and broadband, have significantly reduced opportunities for these important informal and social dimensions of workplace practice. In this paper, the author examines some of the common models used to think about, debate and plan... more In this paper, the author examines some of the common models used to think about, debate and plan workplace literacy and essential (or basic) skills programs. It includes examples of projects and programs from a variety of contexts and countries, and a summary of the findings of research on successful [workplace literacy and essential skills] WLES provision. The author suggests considering 'embedding' not just as a pedagogical strategy within literacy and essential skills work, but also 'embedding' WLES work as a key element of workplace learning overall and as a strategy for organisational development. Digital skills are increasingly being considered as a crucial complement to essential English and maths skills. This applies to all learners, not just those in technical education. The traditional view of literacy as the ability to read and write has expanded to encompass understanding digital tools and information for the whole workforce. However, a high proportion of adults in the UK lack the digital skills to engage fully as citizens, and England and Northern Ireland is below the OECD average for digital skills related to work. This paper argues for an understanding of teaching and teacher development that is realistic and ... more This paper argues for an understanding of teaching and teacher development that is realistic and based on research. It maintains that teaching is a highly complex job requiring technical knowledge, the highest levels of communication skills, empathy, maturity, intuitive understanding and skills in planning and organisation. It argues that debates about the best ways to support and enrich teacher development should be detached from questions about professionalism, which, in the end, is a sociological discussion rather than one about practice. It suggests that a more useful approach to the complexities of teachers’ practice can be found in a generic analysis of craft practice. Support for this view is found in a range of fields of research and theory situated outside of education and, in briefly describing these, the paper aims to illuminate some important generic features of effective practitioner learning.
