A total of 100 subjects with age range 14-19 years were selected and grouped as non smokers (control) and smokers with 50 cases in each. Biochemical analysis of fasting serum lipid profile of each group was assessed using spectrophotometer. By applying independent sample t-test, significant differences were observed in TG, HDL-C and LDL-C and by applying chi-square (χ 2) test, significant association of TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C were found among smokers and controls. From the results of the present study, it may be concluded that, cigarette smoking during adolescent period induces alteration in serum lipid levels in the direction of increased risk for coronary artery disease.

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is also increasing. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the effect of T2DM on thyroid cancer. Methods. A case-control study was performed. A total of 415 healthy controls with thyroid ultrasound screening and physician consultation were selected from the Thyroid Cancer Longitudinal Study (T-CALOS). Among patients with thyroid cancer who were enrolled in T-CALOS, 415 patients were matched to the control group according to age and sex. We assessed the effects of T2DM, T2DM duration, and T2DM medication on thyroid cancer. Results. Women with T2DM had lower odds of thyroid cancer than women without T2DM (odds ratio [OR]: 0.40, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.20-0.81). Individuals receiving T2DM medication had higher odds of thyroid cancer compared to those without T2DM medication (OR: 5.21, 95% CI: 1.58-17.15). Individuals with T2DM duration <6 years had lower odds of thyroid cancer compared to those without T2DM (OR: 0.58, 95% CI: 0.34-0.97). Conclusions. Individuals with early T2DM are presumed to have a low incidence of thyroid cancer, and this effect seems to last up to 6 years after diagnosis of T2DM.

It requires only PCR amplification and electrophoresis afterwards for the determination of genotypes. Despite the reliability of the technique T-ARMS PCR, only fewer studies involving this have been published to date. This is because of the amplicons number which increases per reaction which is tough at times to separate on gel electrophoresis and also it is difficult to find such primers with similar annealing temperature. Considering expenditure of high throughput genotyping in the developing world, this study was designed to optimize an efficient technique, T-ARMSPCR for studying type 2 diabetes (T2D) susceptible gene using TCF7L2 SNP. A pair of non-allele-specific outer forward, reverse primers (OF, OR) and two pairs of allele-specific inner primers (IF1, IF2, IR1, IR2) were designed and optimized in separate reactions after tro...

T2DM is a chronic disease and a rising problem worldwide. Its complications lead to an increase in the burden of mortality specifically in lower and medium-income countries. Genome-wide association studies have spotted many genetic loci that are related to T2DM and validate the complicated polygenic traits. Many variants of different genes including FTO are associated with T2DM hence, this study was designed to inspect and unfold obscure data in South Asians. The main objective of present study is to identify the relation of FTO intronic variant rs9939609 with T2DM in Karachi-based Sindhi population of Pakistan. Total recruited individuals were grouped as diabetic cases and controls. Out of the total recruited subjects, genotyping was done on 152 samples using T-ARMS PCR however, demographic and clinical data were recorded of all individuals. The results showed that the f...
