This milestone has afforded an examination of her life and reign, and has revived interest in the Royal Family at large, including Britain’s longest reigning monarch, Queen Victoria. Queensland – one of the two Australian colonies named after her – presented gifts to the Queen for her Golden Jubilee in 1887 and Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

The diaries exhaustively record Friend's daily life, and offer an intimate glimpse into the artist's thoughts and emotions. Friend (1915-1989) was an equally enthusiastic correspondent, and penned hundreds of letters over his lifetime. In 2011 the State Library of Queensland acquired an important group of over 40 letters that Friend exchanged with his confidante, author and journalist Patricia Bennet (née Massey-Higgins). The letters complement the Library's holding of original materials pertaining to Friend's life and work, which include original works of art, deluxe and illustrated books, correspondence with prominent Brisbane art dealer Brian Johnstone, and Friend's earliest surviving diary, which he composed as a teenager in 1929.

A veritable armada of aeroplanes, hydroplanes and balloons attended the scene, charged with the intent to neutralise the threat; and in a matter of minutes, after a dazzling pyrotechnic display, the raiding Zeppelins were incinerated and grounded. A crowd of thousands who witnessed the assault cheered the victory, but were soon distracted to amusements on the ground including 'Shoot the Kaiser', and 'The Damm Family's Kitchen'.

A... more Colonial itinerant artist Joseph Backler holds a unique place in the history of Australian art. A 'portrait painter to the not particularly rich or famous'; Backler has become noted for his portraits of middle and working class Australians in the mid-nineteenth century. Though lacking the formal training and subsequent polish that can be seen in the work of more prominent Australian society portraitists at the time, Backler's contribution to the portrait genre is no less significant. His honest depictions of successful middle and working class colonists colour the story of Australian colonial art and provide depth to the understanding of colonial Australia's social character.

The National Library of Australia holds a diverse collection of topographical works, including an unusual panorama of the young city of Brisbane, View of
Brisbane (1866). Attributed to the hand of travelling artist Joseph Backler (1813?–1895) by Richard Neville in 2004, the rediscovery of discussions held around the time the painting was created confirms this
attribution and adds depth to Backler’s career in Queensland. View of Brisbane is a significant document relating to colonial Queensland and
presents a unique glimpse of development in Brisbane during the 1860s.

Throughout a distinguished career, she secured monumental commissions, including the tympanum of Brisbane City Hall and a larger-than-life-sized statue of Major General Sir William Glasgow, but was equally comfortable sculpting portrait busts and smaller domestic works. As part of her wider artistic output, Mayo investigated the viability of ceramics as a sculptural medium.

Conveniently located near clay deposits, these firms catered to the requirements of the communities around them and provided an alternative to imported ceramic wares. One leading manufacturer was the Brisbane based firm Stone’s Pottery. Established by Charles Arthur Stone (1866–1936) in 1893 and operating into the 1960s, the firm was responsible for the largest contribution to commercial ceramic production in Queensland. Stone’s Pottery also played a critical role in the development of Brisbane’s art pottery movement, by supplying clays and glazes and firing the works of art potters from 1903 into the mid-twentieth century, and lobbying authorities to support local industries by imposing tariffs on imported products.

Those who did transcend the classroom tutorials often remained faithful to Harvey’s commitment to the Arts and Crafts principles of employing hand-building methods to blend functional forms with tasteful ornament. Clem Ainslie was one of Harvey’s students who faithfully employed this process in her work for over fifteen years.
