With expanding indications of vitrectomy the need for vitreoretinal surgeries are increasing. The present study is carried out to assess the results of combined phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation and pars plana vitrectomy in eyes having coexisting vitreoretinal disorders with significant cataract. It is a prospective, non-comparative, consecutive, interventional study. Total 80 patients were operated for combined phacoemulsification with IOL and PPV from January 2011 to December 2013. All new cases of vitreoretinal disorders with significant cataract were included, whereas high risk diabetic retinopathy cases where two sequential surgeries were done and previous failed vitrectomy cases were excluded ...

BACKGROUND Corneal diseases constitute significant cause of visual impairment and blindness in th... more BACKGROUND Corneal diseases constitute significant cause of visual impairment and blindness in the developing countries, it can be prevented through corneal transplantation. There is a large gap between demand and supply of corneal tissue due to lack of awareness about eye donation. Nurses and paramedical staff are potential source that is underutilised as they are in constant touch with the patients and their relatives and can be inspired to pledge their cornea for eye donation. Aim of the study is to assess the level of awareness among the nursing and paramedical staff regarding eye donation. METHODOLOGY A cross-sectional study was carried out to get the information from nursing and paramedical staff. RESULTS Total 66.16% nursing and 33.83% paramedical staff participated. Among the participants about 60% nurses and 68% paramedics did not know about any existing eye bank in Bhopal. Only 69% of nurses and 13.43% paramedical staff knew that eyes can be removed within 6 hours of death for effective use, 59.54% nurses knew that cornea is used for grafting, but among paramedical staff only 13.43% showed any awareness about the subject. Only 24.42% nurses and 13.43% paramedical staff had good knowledge about eye donation. Total 65% were not willing to donate their own eyes. CONCLUSION Result of this study indicates that there is lack of awareness and poor attitude related to eye donation amongst nurses and paramedical staff. This also indicates a high level of ignorance about eye donation in society in general.

It is preventable, if diagnosed and treated at an early stage. Unfortunately due to lack of awareness and improper screening tools, disease remains undiagnosed and untreated for long period even in educated class of society resulting in permanent blindness. To assess awareness of glaucoma disease, a cross sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital. We included only those individuals who can read and write our questionnaire irrespective of socioeconomic status. This is unlike other studies on awareness of glaucoma which were community based and included either urban or rural population irrespective of literacy rate.

CASE DESCRIPTION A 45 years female came with a history of trauma of right eye with vegetative matter with severe pain and redness. Patient was treated with antibacterial, antifungal eye drops but the condition deteriorated. Diagnosis was based on presence of motile trophozoites and cyst in the culture of non nutrient agar with a lawn of E coli of the corneal ulcer scraping. Therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty was performed as the patient's condition deteriorated. CONCLUSION Acanthamoeba keratitis is a rare parasitic vision threatening infection with poor prognosis in comparison to other infectious keratitis. Therefore prevention is very important.

Newborn presented with a single band of tissue connecting left upper and lower eyelid, resulting in limited palpebral aperture opening. Antenatal history was normal. The baby was operated on the seventh day of life under local anesthesia. The eyelid band was excised at the level of each lid margin resulting in normal eye opening. No underlying ocular abnormalities were noted. Right eye examination was normal. A detail systemic examination by pediatrician failed to reveal any other congenital anomaly. Ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum may be isolated or may present with other congenital anomalies. Therefore, the presence of eyelid bands should alert for complete systemic examination. Prompt treatment is required for proper opening of the eye and to decrease the risk of amblyopia.

Methods: In this prospective, randomized study, 65 patients received either travoprost eye drops once daily in the morning (n=33) or brimonidine/timolol fixed combination eye drops twice daily (n=32). Intra ocular pressure (IOP) was assessed at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. The primary outcome measure was mean reduction in IOP. Results: The baseline mean IOP values were similar between two groups. Mean reduction of IOP in the right eye for brimonidine/timolol fixed combination group was 9±2.9 mmHg, whereas in the left eye it was 10.9±2.8 mmHg. In the travoprost group, the reduction in IOP of the right eye was 7.8±2.9 mmHg (p=0.0002) and 7.5±3.4 mmHg (p=0.0001) in the left eye. The mean reduction of IOP for the brimonidine/timolol group was 9.95 mmHg and for the travoprost group it was 7.6 mmHg (p<0.0001) in both the eyes. Conclusions: The fixed combination brimonidine/timolol twice daily demonstrated superior mean IOP lowering efficacy compared to travoprost 0.004% in patients with open-angle glaucoma.

The patient was evaluated for intracranial space occupying lesion, however, a CT and cerebrospinal tap was normal. No definitive diagnosis could be established and patient developed left eye optic atrophy which was thought to be post papilloedema atrophy. Six months later, the patient had similar visual loss in right eye and he was diagnosed as anterior ischemic optic atrophy (AION) by the ophthalmologist. The inferior altitudinal visual field loss, delayed visual evoked response and clinical picture supported the diagnosis. The patient was diagnosed with hypertension and type 2 diabetes and managed accordingly. All the symptoms, clinical findings, investigations supported the diagnosis of AION which occurred in left eye followed by right eye 6 months later. Appropriate treatment was started and patient regained vision in right eye.
