This thesis entails a Folkloristic analysis of the worship of local deities known as Theyyams, fo... more This thesis entails a Folkloristic analysis of the worship of local deities known as Theyyams, found in the North Malabar region of the Indian state of Kerala. This study is organized is an understanding of Cultural Identity of the folk of North Malabar. The Theyyam has a capacity to discard the 'identity crisis' which we are facing in a fast changing globalizing world, by giving a social identity to the people of North Malabar. Theyyam had socioeconomic significance with the evolution of a multi-cast, pluralistic and complex society. Theyyam also serves the society, as a critique of the socio-cultural discrimination and which is an instrument to condemn social evils. It is also alive as a more popular cultural phenomenon in North Malabar, which helps in maintaining socio-cultural identity through observing certain widespread rituals and performance that have been inherited from the distant past. The methods used in this research include semantic analyses of interview materials, combined with a close reading of the texts of worship, as well as more standard social organizational fieldwork. The subject matter brought together includes observed Theyyam performances and festivals, the Theyyam ritual texts, various historical works, shrine-charters and myths, and several case-studies of shrines in an ethno historical perspective.

Marakkala (Vessel) Deities in Theyyam and Coastal Culture of North Malabar

Kerala's geographical feature is the long coastline which is situated between the Western Ghats a... more Kerala's geographical feature is the long coastline which is situated between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. The total length of the coast of Kerala state is 590 km. 26 percent of the coast lies (152 km) in Kasaragod and Kannur districts, which are the hotbeds of Theyyam worship. There will be an increase in the coastal areas of Theyyam when there is an inclusion of other Theyyam worshipping areas like South…. It has been found that the sea and the coast have had a great influence on the Theyyam ritual as well as on all the other aspects of people's life in this region. There are a lot of seafaring stories in Theyyam myths. Most of the Theyyam deities came by sea voyages especially in ships which according to the Theyyam terminology are known as Marakkalam. Many deities who came to see Malanadu (Malabar) arrived from Aryarnadu (assumed as Khargone in Madhyapredesh). Among the Theyyam classifications Marakala Theyyam category exist as a distinctive variant Theyyam group. The Marakkala songs talk about the concept of vessel making with wood crafting in detail. The deities associated with the fishermen community (Mukaya-Mukuva) of Kasaragod district are seafaring and have settled along the coast. Some of these deities are also worshiped by other communities living in the hinterland.
