As the initiator of product development, this situation can challenge product designers. Since customers may have varied expectations and preferences for green products, it depends on the green attributes embedded in the product and cultural value influences. As the natural behavior setting, cultural value has been proven to influence customer preferences in the literature. However, it was identified that previous studies had not clearly defined the consideration of cultural values in green product design. Therefore, this study aimed to generate a conceptual framework for embedding cultural value consideration in green product design. A comprehensive review of green product design and cultural values has been performed to align the relevancies for constructing the conceptual framework. Bibliographic analysis using the PRISMA approach was also perform...

The typical VSM technique does not consider the societal and the environmental metrics that are imperative for determining the sustainability for any production line. Additionally, the Guidelines for Green Industry Auditor, 2014, published by the Department of Environment, Malaysia, have made no mention regarding the proper lean tools which need to be applied to the audit systems as per the USEPA for improving the system. The VSM ability to determine the environmental, economic and societal performance would help VSM be a useful tool. Also, many companies can apply the data generated in a better manner and change their operations to fit the technology for improving the manufacturing. This paper has presented a CP implementation with the help of a VSM technology, based on the earlier lit...

Due to the economic downturn, the semiconductor company under study wanted to determine the ideal number of operators to be employed especially at the critical operations in order to minimize the labor cost and improve labor productivity. Thus, the main focus of the study is to perform analysis at the bottleneck area in order to determine the labor utilization and also toidentify the ideal man to machine ratio at the semi-automatic final test operation. The lean work study analysis using Process Mapping and Maynard Operational Sequence Technique (MOST) also enabled the authors to unveil the various types of wastes occurring at the final test area in order to propose lean improvement activities. Six Sigma Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) approach was employed during the implementation of the study. The results of the final test area Lean Six Sigma study showed significant improvements could be made on the labor utilization and man to machine ratio. With the knowledge of how to improve the labor productivity, the semiconductor company will be on the right track towards achieving a leaner and more cost effective operation.

Various factors could affect manufacturing performance such as equipment performance, material planning and human resources. In this paper, focus was given primarily on the human resource which was considered as an important factor of the simulation model development to achieve optimum utilization and ensure efficient operator allocation to the machines. Static modeling was performed to capture all the critical factors contributing to the work such as the operator activity sequence, the time value for each activity and also the machine process time for each batch of product. A dynamic model was then developed to enable quantitative analysis in the optimization of human system performance. This paper illustrates the application of different modeling approaches to demonstrate advantages gained in the process of evaluating human system performance.

The aim is to offer manufacturing as a service so that an individual or organization is willing to manufacture products and utilize this service without having to make capital investment. However, industry adoption of CM paradigm is still limited. This paper compared the current adoption of CM by the industry with the ideal CM environment. The gaps between the two were identified and related research topics were reviewed. This paper also outlined research areas to be pursued to facilitate CM adoption by the manufacturing industry. This will also improve manufacturing resource utilization efficiencies not only within an organization but globally. At the end, the cost benefits will be passed down to end customer.

Human competencies are valuable to the operation and are considered to be the most flexible manufacturing component. However, there is still lack of study on the impact of human aspects to the cellular manufacturing system performance. This article reports a case study application to evaluate the human impact in the complex cellular manufacturing system. Specifically, this work shows a systematic approach to depict and evaluate the human dynamics and attributes in measuring the labor utilization and determining the ideal man-machine configuration. The literature on modelling technologies relevant to cellular manufacturing design and change is presented to provide the rationale for the use of heuristic and enterprise modelling for this study. Evaluations on the existing human system model, CIMOSA and the heuristic mathematical model resulted in the development of an enhanced human system model framework. The newly developed model focuses on the aspects of human dynamics and attributes. To improve human work measurement data accuracy, the model also uses Maynard Operational Sequence Technique (MOST). An expert system was also developed which greatly reduced the time and effort spent on data entry and data analysis. An example using a multinational semiconductor assembly and test company is presented where 20% improvement in resource efficiency and additional machine to a labor reconfiguration was achieved without any human fallout.

Manpower study traditionally employs work study methods such as Process Mapping and Man-Machine Charts which are no longer suitable to be used in the complicated manufacturing environment such as in the electronics manufacturing facility. Thus, a modified work-study architecture is designed and applied at the process under study to optimize the man-machine configuration. This paper details out the development and implementation of the work study architecture to perform lean waste analysis at an electronic manufacturing company. The benefits observed from the implementation phase indicate that the lean waste analysis performed using this system has reduced the lengthy time that work-study usually takes, eliminated human error during analysis and improved the accuracy of data.
