To the Lighthouse, one of the most prominent modernist novels, was published by the famous modern... more To the Lighthouse, one of the most prominent modernist novels, was published by the famous modernist writer Virginia Woolf in 1927. The book was a landmark for both the author and the development of modernism in literature; it won her the Prix Femina reward the following year and gained her the reputation of one of Britain's important living authors. To the Lighthouse, unlike other books, is not really concerned with plot. Instead, it paints a verbal picture of the members of the Ramsay family and their friends where the author relied on the stream of consciousness in her writing which makes the book neither easy to read nor to understand. The book depicts various themes through different characters concerning that period of time. One of the major themes discussed in the novel is the conflict between the traditional female and the Modern female image, which are represented by the main characters, Mrs.Ramsay, the beautiful wife and angel of the house, and Lily Briscoe, the independent artist. The focus of this paper, however, will be on the character of Lily Briscoe, a woman artist whose creative process is traced by Virginia Woolf through the character's emotional, psychological and artistic growth especially. This latter plays an important role in defining the modern woman. , one of the foremost modernists British writers of the 20 th century, was born on 25 January 1882 in a privileged Victorian family house. She was the second daughter of Leslie Stephenwho was the editor of the Dictionary of National Biography-and Julia (Jackson) Duckworth Stephen-the daughter of the writer William Thackeray-. Virginia Woolf was educated by her parents unlike her brother and sisters who had formal education.
