The articular surface of distal radius is biconcave, triangular, and covered with hyaline cartilage. A smooth anteroposterior ridge divides the articular surface into two facets: a lateral triangular facet, which articulates with the scaphoid, and a medial quadrilateral facet, which articulates with the lunate. There are various classifications for the fracture of lower end radius. For this paper, we have used the AO classification of lower end radius. In this classification, number 23 signifies distal radius and ulna fracture. 'A' is for extraarticular fractures, 'B' is for partial articular fracture of radius and 'C' is for complete articular fracture. 1 The distal radius fractures are complex injuries. The standard treatment of these fractures still remains controversial. There are specific problems in terms of stability and stiffness of wrist joint and fingers due to ABSTRACT Background: The distal radius fractures are complex injuries. There are many treatment options for these fractures. The benefits of external fixation with mini fixator have been seen in many studies. In our study, the distal radius fracture belonging to type B and C of AO classification were treated with wrist spaning mini extrernal fixator with/without additional k wires. We wish to analyse the functional outcome and to determine any complications of this procedure. Methods: 20 patients were included in this study and were followed up for up to 6 months postoperatively. We assessed pain using VAS score at 6 weeks follow-up and the outcome of each patient was assessed using Mayo wrist score post-operatively on follow-up at 3 months and 6 months. Results: Predominance towards males and left upper limb was observed in our study. At the end of six months, the range of motion as assessed according to the criteria given by Mayo wrist score, excellent results (MWS>=90) were seen in 4 patients (20%), good results (MWS 80-89) were seen in 12 patients (60%),and fair (MWS 70-79) in 4 patient (20%). At the end of result, significant reduction in terms of pain, wellbeing, personal life, social life, lifting, travelling and sleeping was seen. Conclusions: Predominance towards males and left upper limb was observed in our study. At the end of six months, the range of motion as assessed according to the criteria given by Mayo Wrist Score, excellent results (MWS>=90) were seen in 4 patients (20%), good results (MWS 80-89) were seen in 12 patients (60%),and fair (MWS 70-79) in 4 patient (20%). Background: Sciatica resulting from a lumbar intervertebral disc herniation is the most common ca... more Background: Sciatica resulting from a lumbar intervertebral disc herniation is the most common cause of radicular leg pain in adult working population. It can be treated with both conservative and operative methods. In our study, surgical treatment of lumbar disc prolapse has been done by open discectomy. We wish to assess the outcome of surgery in patients with lumbar disc prolapse undergoing lumbar discectomy. Methods: 40 patients were included in this study and were followed up for up to 1 year postoperatively. We assessed the outcome of each patient with ODI and VAS post-operatively and on follow-up at 3 weeks, 6 months and 1 year. Subjective evaluation of the patient's satisfaction at the final follow-up was also done. Results: We found that males had higher incidence of PIVD with an average duration of symptoms before surgery about 8.62 months. Left side was most involved and level l4-l5 was most involved level. The mean ODI and VAS score pre-operatively were 26.85±4.20 and 7.73±0.88 respectively, which changed to 4.48±5.15 and 1.70±1.57, respectively at 1 year post-operative follow-up. These were statistically highly significant. Most of the patients (34) gave a subjective evaluation as excellent at 1 year follow-up. Conclusions: Our study established that open discectomy has a satisfactory functional outcome and leads to a significant improvement in the patients' quality of life.

Developing an effective real-time evacuation strategy during extreme storm events such as hurrica... more Developing an effective real-time evacuation strategy during extreme storm events such as hurricanes has been a topic of critical significance to the emergency planning and response community. The spatial and temporal variabilities of inland flooding during hurricanes present significant challenges for robust evacuation planning. In this study, a framework for real-time evacuation planning was developed that combines the results obtained from hydrodynamic modeling and traffic microsimulation. First, a fine-scale hydrodynamic model was developed based on depth-averaged 2D shallow-water equations (SWE) to obtain information pertaining to flood depth and velocity for planning evacuation routes during a storm event. Next, a traffic microsimulation was conducted using time-dependent information from the hydrodynamic model regarding the traffic velocities along evacuation routes during an event. An optimization technique was also implemented to reduce the overall travel time by about 6% from that of the base model. The last component of the framework involves combining the results from both models to generate a time-lapse animation of emergency evacuation based on a geographic information system (GIS). The results obtained using this framework could be easily accessed by the general public and decision-makers to enable efficient evacuation planning during extreme storm events.

Background: Low backache and sciatica is a common complaint signifying some underlying pathology;... more Background: Low backache and sciatica is a common complaint signifying some underlying pathology; it may be a soft tissue strain or disc protrusion, or conditions such as neoplasm or ankylosing spondylitis besides others. We aim to assess the functional outcome of epidural steroid injection in patients with low backache and sciatica as well as the effect of pre operative duration of symptoms in Indian population presenting to our centre, on the post procedure outcome, if any. Methods: 50 patients were evaluated with complaints of low backache and radiculopathy. They were subjected to following questionnaires including the ODI and VAS, and the scores were evaluated before and after the intervention, and at every follow up. Results: Patients commonly affected were from 4th and 5th decade. The commonest intervertebral disc involved was L4-5 (44%) followed by L5-S1 (30%). Significant Functional status improvement according to ODI scoring was observed in all follow up visits. Similarly significant reduction in pain intensity according to VAS scoring was observed in all follow up visits. On comparing the improvement in functional status (ODI) and pain (VAS) between the 3 groups, it is seen that patients in group A had the highest rate of improvement, while patients in group C had the least improvement. Conclusions: Caudal epidural injections are safe, effective and less expensive modality of treatment without any significant complications. The lesser the duration of symptoms i.e. earlier the patient presents, better are the results with caudal epidural injection.

Several recent studies have found that a significant portion of truck traffic operates with weights above legal weight limits, which are not considered in current pavement design practices. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the goal of this partnership was to form a multidisciplinary engineering team focused on adapting current experiments to more environmentally conscious alternatives. Civil Engineering Materials is a required junior level 2- credit course with a lab on aggregates, cement, cement concrete and asphalt, and hot mix asphalt. There were 72 students in the class with 24 groups of three members each. In fall 2017, the instructor introduced an activity in half of the number of groups compared the testing standard of construction materials between two states within the US and the other half compared the testing standards between a state in the US and a different country. The objective of this activity was to expose half of the cohort of students to practices in different countries and evaluate the impact of exposing this activity on the social attitudes. In this paper, we present a study conducted to develop three different POF forecasting machine learning models and a statistical regression model using four-dimensional GPS and RADAR Track data from 57 flights provided by an En Route Computer System. The investigated machine learning models include Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network (LSTM-RNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (NODE). These were developed to forecast the horizontal and vertical POF of the current aircraft for the next time step. SCDOT hires many consultants to provide professional services in support of its planning, design,... more SCDOT hires many consultants to provide professional services in support of its planning, design, construction and maintenance projects. SCDOT personnel responsible for procuring and administering these professional service contracts, especially Contract Managers, have received no formal training and are provided with few official references. SCDOT also felt a need for a comparative analysis of state DOTs' policies and practices to identify deficiencies and opportunities to improve SCDOT's current professional service contracts procurement and administrative practices. In order to address SCDOT's needs for formal procurement and administrative training as well as a comparative analysis of state DOTs' policies and procedures, the objectives of this project were as follows: 1) Identify current SCDOT contract management policies and practices, 2) Evaluate policies and practices of other DOTs regarding professional services contract management, 3) Develop formal training material for SCDOT Contract Managers, 4) Develop and recommend "Best Practices" for SCDOT and identify opportunities for improvements in professional services contract management. These objectives were met by first studying and outlining SCDOT's current procurement and administration practices and processes. To conduct the comparative analysis, seven southern state DOTs' policies and practices were studied through a comprehensive literature review, state specific paper surveys, and personnel interviews. Best Practices were identified and recommendations for SCDOT were developed. A SCDOT training manual was created by studying SCDOT policy and process documents, and conducting interviews with SCDOT personnel. The manual was reviewed and validated during a pilot training session with SCDOT contract managers and the project steering committee. Five recommendations are made to SCDOT to continue the improvement of the professional services procurement and administrative practices and policies: 1) SCDOT should assign responsibility of the training material to the Chief Procurement Officer, 2) SCDOT decision makers should review the Best Practices and reference the document to guide the evolution of procurement and administration processes and policies, 3) SCDOT should hold an annual or bi-annual training session for current Contract Managers to review current practices, address issues, and implement changes, 4) SCDOT should break down the training material into subject specific sections and develop 15-20 modules that can be accessed online by Contract Managers, 5) SCDOT should develop a certification program for Contract Managers utilizing the online modules.

Phase of flight (POF) prediction estimates the future state of aircraft along planned trajectorie... more Phase of flight (POF) prediction estimates the future state of aircraft along planned trajectories, allowing the prediction of potential conflicts as well as optimization of air space, controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration. In this paper, we present a study conducted to develop three different POF forecasting machine learning models and a statistical regression model using four-dimensional GPS and RADAR Track data from 57 flights provided by an En Route Computer System. The investigated machine learning models include Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network (LSTM-RNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (NODE). These were developed to forecast the horizontal and vertical POF of the current aircraft for the next time step. The project is in its first year and therefore what is described in this paper will be a brief overview of the project and some of the work done during the first year. The proposed research is to explore how the representation of women and Underrepresented Minority (URM) students and historically underserved groups will be increased in an engineering department by deploying a multi-pronged approach. Our definition of diverse student populations includes both visible differences such as gender and racial minorities, but also includes invisible differences such as poor, LGBTQ, disabled, veterans, and others. SCDOT hires many consultants to provide professional services in support of its planning, design,... more SCDOT hires many consultants to provide professional services in support of its planning, design, construction and maintenance projects. SCDOT personnel responsible for procuring and administering these professional service contracts, especially Contract Managers, have received no formal training and are provided with few official references. SCDOT also felt a need for a comparative analysis of state DOTs' policies and practices to identify deficiencies and opportunities to improve SCDOT's current professional service contracts procurement and administrative practices. In order to address SCDOT's needs for formal procurement and administrative training as well as a comparative analysis of state DOTs' policies and procedures, the objectives of this project were as follows: 1) Identify current SCDOT contract management policies and practices, 2) Evaluate policies and practices of other DOTs regarding professional services contract management, 3) Develop formal training material for SCDOT Contract Managers, 4) Develop and recommend "Best Practices" for SCDOT and identify opportunities for improvements in professional services contract management. These objectives were met by first studying and outlining SCDOT's current procurement and administration practices and processes. To conduct the comparative analysis, seven southern state DOTs' policies and practices were studied through a comprehensive literature review, state specific paper surveys, and personnel interviews. Best Practices were identified and recommendations for SCDOT were developed. A SCDOT training manual was created by studying SCDOT policy and process documents, and conducting interviews with SCDOT personnel. The manual was reviewed and validated during a pilot training session with SCDOT contract managers and the project steering committee. Five recommendations are made to SCDOT to continue the improvement of the professional services procurement and administrative practices and policies: 1) SCDOT should assign responsibility of the training material to the Chief Procurement Officer, 2) SCDOT decision makers should review the Best Practices and reference the document to guide the evolution of procurement and administration processes and policies, 3) SCDOT should hold an annual or bi-annual training session for current Contract Managers to review current practices, address issues, and implement changes, 4) SCDOT should break down the training material into subject specific sections and develop 15-20 modules that can be accessed online by Contract Managers, 5) SCDOT should develop a certification program for Contract Managers utilizing the online modules.

Dr. Bhavsar received his Ph.D. degree in 2013 and his M.S. degree in 2006 from Clemson University. His Ph.D. dissertation focused on development of an evaluation framework for connected vehicle technology supported alternative fuel vehicles. Dr. Bhavsar also has three years of experience in the private sector in developing transportation engineering and planning solutions, specifically traffic micro-simulation projects.

From 1998-2016, Stephanie was a faculty member in Chemical Engineering at Rowan. Dr. Farrell has contributed to engineering education through her work in experiential learning, focusing on areas of pharmaceutical, biomedical and food engineering. She has been honored by the American Society of Engineering Education with several teaching awards such as the 2004 National Outstanding Teaching Medal and the 2005 Quinn Award for experiential learning.

Dr. Tang is very active in adapting and developing pedagogical methods and materials to enhance engineering education. Her most recent educational research includes the collaboration with Tennessee State University and local high schools to infuse cyberinfrastructure learning experience into the pre-engineering and technology-based classrooms, the collaboration with community colleges to develop interactive games in empowering students with engineering literacy and problem-solving, the integration of system-on-chip concepts across two year Engineering Science and four year ECE curricula, and the implementation of an educational innovation that demonstrates science and engineering principles using an aquarium. Her work has resulted in over 100 journal and conference papers and book chapters.
