Diabetes mellitus, an endocrine and metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and low blo... more Diabetes mellitus, an endocrine and metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and low blood insulin or target organs insensitivity to insulin affects life quality due to its complications. Infertility is a complication in diabetes. Various agents have been used for research on diabetes-induced infertility globally, but there are little documented treatments for diabetes associated infertility. Allium cepa scaly leaves extract (ACSLE) possess anti-oxidant and anti-diabetic activities. This study investigated the effects of ACSLE on reproductive dysfunctions in male diabetic rats. Twenty eight male rats were assigned to 4 groups (n=7): CT (control); DNT (streptozotocin, 60 mg/kg once, intraperitoneal), DT1 and DT2 (streptozotocin, 60 mg/kg once, intraperitoneal, ACSLE 125 and 250 mg/kg rat/day respectively). Organ samples were obtained after 2 weeks and testicular weights recorded. Fasting blood glucose was determined using a digital glucometer. Sperm count, motility, viabilit...

Methods: Twenty-four rats were purchased and divided into four groups consisting of six rats each. Control group (CON) received 0.5 mL of distilled water, i.m., infected but not treated group (INF) received 2×106 trypanosome/mL i.m., infected but diminazene aceturate-treated group (INFDIM) received 2×106 trypanosome/mL, 3.5 mg/kg, i.m.) and non-infected but diminazene aceturate-treated group (DIM) received 3.5 mg/kg, i.m. and served as negative control. The blood pressures were measured using a CODA 2® non-invasive blood pressure monitor (Kent Scientific, USA). The results were compiled and statistical analysis was done with significance set at p≥0.05. Results: The values of the blood pressure readings of the Trypanosoma-infected INF (137.0±2.0 mmHg) and diminazene-treated rats INFDIM (125.0±7.5 ...

Methods 30 sexually matured rats were used for the study with 10 each in the control and treatment 100 mgkg−1 and 400 mgkg−1 groups. The extract was orally administered for 14 days. Histological sections of tissues collected presented no abnormalities. Results An increase in the number of developing and matured follicles were observed during the study in the treated groups compared to the control in the follicular and the luteal phases. The corpora lutea in the treated groups were fewer in number to that of the control in the follicular phase and in the luteal phase. Sections of the uterine horns showed significant narrowing in the lumen diameter and increases in epithelial height with increased laydown of the lamina propria in the treated groups. The expression of protein bands fractionated during the study...

Aspirin at 150 mg/kg, indomethacin at 10 mg/kg as positive control, and methanolic extracts and solvent fractions ofPercentage inhibition of the paw volume was highest in rats administered indomethacin (85.7%) followed by the group administered methanolic extract ofThis study suggested that

The aqueous and methanolic extracts were administered to 48 rats orally at a dose of 400 mg·kg-1 for 21 days. Fractions (hydromethanol, hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate) from bio-activity guided fractionation and chromatographic sub fractions (CsF) A-F from accelerated gradient chromatography were also evaluated in 45 rats for the hypoglycaemic activity at doses of 400 mg·kg-1, 200 mg·kg-1 and 100 mg·kg-1 of solvent fractions and (CsF) A-F, respectively. Glibenclamide was used as positive control. Polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate and distilled water administered to rats were used as negative controls. The dose of 400 mg·kg-1 of aqueous and methanolic extracts and 100 mg·kg-1 of chloroform CsF B of Morinda morindoides caused (62.8%, 56% and 74%, respectively) redu...
