Despite multiple treatment innovations, BPH still remains a nightmare for ageing men, mostly due to its distressing lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and sexual dysfunction. The severity of LUTS is graded by international prostate symptom score or American urological association symptom index (AUA-SI) along with impact on quality of life (QOL). The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an Unani polyherbal formulation, Habb-i-muqil, in improving the AUA-SI and QOL in patients with BPH. Methods: In an open, standard controlled study, 76 men, diagnosed with clinical BPH, aged between 40 and 80 years were randomly allocated for treatment for duration of 90 days with Habb-i-muqil (test drug) or Tamsulosin (standard control) after ethical approval. AUA-SI and QOL were assessed at baseline (0 day) and days 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90. Results: Analysis of 60 men showed that after 90 days of treatment the percentage changes in the AUA-SI from baseline were 59.4 and 49.4% by Habb-i-muqil and tamsulosin, respectively. The test drug produced statistically significant improvement (p<0.001) in overall AUA-SI and QOL compared with standard control. Conclusions: The Unani polyherbal formulation, Habb-i-muqil, was effective in improving AUA-SI and QOL in men with BPH in comparison to tamsulosin. Both the treatments were generally well tolerated.

Kashmir division consists of 10 districts each whereas Ladakh division consists of 2 districts. Srinagar is the summer capital of J&K state. Plants have been traditionally used for hundreds of years throughout globe as a source of medicine. Forest resources in the state of Jammu and Kashmir have played the most significant role in the economy of the state. The present study was conducted to know the attitude of women towards use of medicinal plants in Kashmir valley. In this paper, a well designed and validated questionnaire was used to collect the information from a sample of 400 women who visited unani hospitals selected randomly from Srinagar district of Kashmir valley. The results of our study showed that women show positive attitude towards the use of medicinal plants during illness. The women’s under study further revealed that due to less expenditure and side effect of modern medicines they are encouraged by elders to use medicinal plants for treatment. It is concluded from our study that there is an urgent need of giving mass awareness on importance of forests and medicinal plants to the women of Kashmir valley. Finally, in this paper, we discuss the importance of medicinal plants and suggestions were given which definitely help in conservation of the fast eroding precious medicinal plants of the Kashmir valley.

It results in "lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)" or prostatism which is quite annoying to the individual, affecting his quality of life. Worldwide, prevalence of BPH ranges from 20% to 62% in men beyond 50 years of age with the economic cost worth billions of dollars. Despite multiple treatment innovations, BPH still remains a nightmare for the ageing men, mostly due to its distressing LUTS and sexual dysfunction. Notably, conventional treatments for BPH like 5a-reductase inhibitors and invasive surgery are associated with some obvious side effects. Conversely, evidences, though limited, have shown that alternative medicines are safer and have potential to improve the symptoms and quality of life in addition to improving sexual dysfunction in patients with BPH. The current article includes an overview of BPH, different ways of its management and particularly its appreciation in Greco-Arab (Unani) system of medicine, one of the alternative medicinal systems. In such a system of medicine, BPH, traced under the headings of Waram unuq al-math ana (bladder neck swelling) and Insid ad majr a-imath ana (bladder outlet obstruction), has been managed for centuries with herbal medicines yet demanding a comprehensive scientific validation. Among the herbs, Cucurbita pepo, Tribulus terrestris, Urtica dioica and Linum usitatissimum are worth mentioning. For achieving the goal of LUTS-free ageing men and safer and cost-effective future management of BPH, such medicine could hopefully prove beneficial.

According to the prevalence report, it is the third most prevalent disorder worldwide. In Unani Medicine, it is called shaqiqa derived from an Arabic word 'shaq' meaning 'half part'. The condition is difficult to treat by medication only. Unani system of medicine has a theory of imala (diversion of morbid matters) and tanqia-e-mawad (evacuation of morbid matters) by using different modes of ilaj bit tadbeer (regimenal therapy) and pharmacotherapy. A therapy including regimenal therapy and pharmacotherapy has been used in this case for 23 days. Nutool (irrigation therapy) and Dalak (massage therapy) by Rogan-e-Kaddu (medicated oil) were given as regimenal mode and Itrifal Ustukhuddus, Itrifal Kishnizi and Jawarish Shahi were given orally as pharmacotherapy. Signs and symptoms were assessed by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and result was assessed as per grading system, such as complete relief, relief, partial relief and no relief. After completion of the treatment and post treatment follow up, complete relief from the sign and symptoms was observed. The study suggested the authenticity of principles of treatment of Unani Medicine.

It has been proved that intervention causes reduction in oedema, pain and conjunction. Keloids were described by Egyptian surgeons around 1700BC. Alibert called the Keloid first cancroids and later cheloide. Keloid usually grows beyond the borders of the original wound in claw-like growths and can develop after acne, body piercings, burns, laceration, surgical wounds etc. The aim of present study was to assess the effect of leech therapy in resolving the Keloid without surgical intervention and to avoid the scar formation and recurrence.
