Similar to EDM, in micro-EDM, intense heat is generated between the workpiece and tool electrode ... more Similar to EDM, in micro-EDM, intense heat is generated between the workpiece and tool electrode by the discharge through a dielectric medium to result in the formation of a microcrater that is much smaller in size. In this study, a single-spark generator has been developed to study the erosion characteristics from the microcrater size. Using a simple heat transfer model, the efficiency at different discharge condition is also deduced. It is found that at lower-energy (<50 J) discharges, the energy required to remove the unit volume of material, defined as the specific energy, is found to be much less than that at higher-energy discharges. Additionally, the ratio of the standard deviation to the measured microcrater size is found to be lower at lower discharge energy, indicating greater consistency in shape and size when the discharge occurs at lower energy. The fundamental erosion mechanism of material is discussed by considering melting and evaporation phenomena using theoretical modeling. The average efficiency of erosion, when estimated to be due primarily to melting or evaporation alone, is found to be up to an order of magnitude higher at lower-energy discharges than that at higher-energy discharges.

The main advantages of the micro-EDM method are its low set-up cost, high accuracy and large design freedom. Compared to etching or deposition techniques, micro-EDM has the advantage of being able to fabricate complex three-dimensional shapes with high-aspect ratio. However, there are many operating parameters that affect the micro-EDM process. The fabrication of micro-electrodes on the machine is also an important process to remove the clamping error to maintain high accuracy in the machined micro-structures.

It is based on two recent approaches, genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA), which have been applied to many difficult combinatorial optimization problems with certain strengths and weaknesses. In this paper, a hybrid of GA and SA (GSA) is presented to use the strengths of

Much work has been carried out in the analysis and detection of these phenomena. However, most work has been mainly concerned with single, isolated detection of such phenomena. The relationships between each fault have so far received very little attention. This paper presents a neural-network-based on-line fault diagnosis scheme which monitors the level of tool wear, chatter vibration and chip breaking in a turning operation. The experimental results show that the neural network has a high prediction success rate.

Because ILs have environmentally benign properties, they can be used in place of traditional chemicals in numerous products and processes. In this work, PMMA was formulated using dioctyl phthalate, DOP, as a traditional plasticizer, and properties were compared to PMMA plasticized with two ILs: butyl methylimidazolium/hexafluorophosphate, [bmim þ ][PF À 6 ], and hexyl methylimidazolium/hexafluorophosphate, [hmim þ ][PF À 6 ]. Formulations incorporated up to 30 vol.% DOP and 50 vol.% ILs. Bulk and plasticized polymers were characterized for glass transition temperature, elastic modulus, and the thermal stability of the plasticizers.
