Prevalence rates of ethnic discrimination among Latino middle and high school students show that ... more Prevalence rates of ethnic discrimination among Latino middle and high school students show that 80% report at least one discriminatory incident at school (Gonzalez et al., 2014) and these experiences with discrimination pose a serious risk to Latino adolescents' healthy adjustment and overall development (e.g., Berkel et al., 2010). The proposed chapter presents a practical understanding of the experience of ethnic discrimination among Latino adolescents, addresses specific forms and contexts of discrimination (e.g., peer, teacher, police), and delineates the detrimental effects discrimination can have on youths’ academic, physical, and mental health outcomes. We also discuss how protective factors that may occur within the individual, family, neighborhood, and/or school context may help to mitigate the negative effects of ethnic discrimination on youths’ well-being.

The enzyme was immobilized by entrapment on agar-agarose beads, with an entrapment yield of 19.9%. The identification of the bacteria was carried out using 16s rDNA sequencing. The enzyme was purified through ion exchange chromatography (IEX) in a DEAE-Sephadex column, revealing a protein with a molecular weight of ≈130 kDa. The enzyme was stable at pH 3.0 and heat stable up to 80 °C. However, the optimum conditions were reached at 65 °C and pH 3.0, with a specific activity of 1851.7 U mg−1 ± 1.3. The agar-agarose immobilized α-amylase had a hydrolytic activity nearly 25% higher when compared to the free enzyme. This study provides critical information for the understanding of the enzymatic profile of B. licheniformis strain LB04 and the potential application of the microorga...

Ho... more A blood pressure profile (BPP) is often used to diagnose and manage hypertension in pregnancy. However, there is no consensus on the number and interval of blood pressure (BP) readings required. To ascertain whether BP readings at 15-min interval over one hour yields clinically equivalent results to readings at 60-min interval over three hours. Eighty unique women were recruited to this prospective study. Automated BP machines were used to take readings at 15-min interval over one hour and at 60-min interval over three hours. The mean systolic and diastolic BPs obtained using each regimen were calculated and compared. Women also completed a questionnaire to evaluate the psychosocial and financial impact of a prolonged outpatient investigation. BP readings from 67 patients were included for analysis. Clinical equivalence was assessed using the British Hypertension Society (BHS) validation criteria for comparing nonmercury devices to the gold-standard calibrated mercury device. Mean SBP readings for 54% (36/67), 90% (60/67) and 97% (65/67) and mean DBP readings for 73% (49/67), 94% (63/67) and 100% (67/67) were within 5, 10 and 15 mmHg agreement across the two time regimens which achieved grade B and grade A validation, respectively. A BPP was costly and stressful for women and affected their ability to attend work and look after other children. A BPP performed over one hour compared to over three hours yields clinically equivalent results, yet has psychosocial and financial advantages.

Female rat pups received either MPH (2.0 mg/kg, i.p.) or saline twice daily between postnatal days 20-35. This period of exposure represents the time just prior to puberty as well as puberty onset. Approximately five weeks after the last injection of MPH or saline, female subjects were hormone-primed and tested during their first sexual experience. Subjects were given the choice to interact with a sexually active male or a sexually receptive female rat (i.e., the partner-preference test). The partnerpreference paradigm allows us to assess multiple aspects of female sexual behavior. MPH exposure during peri-adolescence delayed puberty and, when mated for the first time, affected sexual behavior (e.g., increased time spent with the male stimulus and decreased the likelihood of leaving after mounts) during the test of partner preference. When monitoring estrous cyclicity, female subjects treated with MPH during peri-adolescence frequently experienced irregular estrous cycles. The results of the present study suggest that chronic exposure to a therapeutic dose of MPH around the onset of puberty alters long-term endocrine functioning, but with hormone priming, increases sensitivity to sexual stimuli.

A prospective study of 35 women with a complaint of chronic pelvic pain was performed between August 2002 and September 2003. These patients underwent a workup to exclude other causes of pelvic pain and underwent a laparoscopy and a cystoscopy with hydrodistention at 80 cm of hydrostatic water pressure. Results were obtained and quantified. Twenty-eight patients (80%) were diagnosed with interstitial cystitis, 28 were diagnosed with endometriosis (80%), 24 had both disease entities simultaneously (69%), and 32 (91%) had endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, or both. Three patients (9%) had neither and were diagnosed with other pathologies. Chronic pelvic pain is a major concern for many women in the United States. Patients with chronic pelvic pain have traditionally been difficult to manage. A large percentage of women presenting with chronic pelvi...

Ma... more Sample preparation continues to be a major challenge for SIMS studies of biological materials. Maintaining the native hydrated state of the material is important for preserving both chemical and spatial information. Here, we discuss a method that combines a sample wash and dry protocol followed by plunge‐freezing in liquid ethane for a frozen‐hydrated analysis of mammalian cells (HeLa). This method allows for the removal of the growth medium and maintains the hydrated state of the cells so that they can be prepared frozen‐hydrated without the need for a freeze‐fracture device. The cells, which were grown on silicon, were successfully regrown after the cleaning procedure, confirming that a significant portion of the cells remain undamaged during the wash and dry procedure. Results from preliminary SIMS measurements show that is it possible to detect a large variety of biomolecular signals, including intact lipids from the plasma membrane in the mass range of 700–900 Da from single ce...

A prospective study of 162 consecutive women with a complaint of chronic pelvic pain seen in the clinic was performed between August 2002 and December 2005. These patients underwent a workup to exclude other causes of pelvic pain, had PUF (Pain Urgency and Frequency) questionnaires filled out, and underwent a laparoscopy and a cystoscopy with hydrodistention. Pain levels were determined, and treatment was reviewed and enumerated. Results were obtained and quantified. In this study, 123 (76%) patients were diagnosed with active endometriosis, 133 (82%) were diagnosed with interstitial cystitis, and 107 (66%) had both disease entities simultaneously. Thirteen (8%) patients were diagnosed with pathologies unrelated to endometriosis and interstitial c...
