These spaces may be unfamiliar territory for many students. Humour used in library orientation elicits enjoyment and helps to connect librarians and students. Low and high inference humour used during orientation can help connect students new to those landscapes with information and to librarians. Appropriate use of instructional humour in orientations can reduce students’ anxiety about using the library, especially when they need help from library staff. This reflective write up on using humour in library orientations, is to demonstrate how we used humour to create a comfortable learning environment, to encourage students to visit the library, to improve (hopefully!) recall and retention of course content, and enable positive associations with library resources or the librarian. There are challenges with humour when the classroom is diverse or if humour i...

Through participant interviews, this study reports on member perceptions of diversity in the areas of member recruitment, qualifications, training, and length of term. Board members from four public libraries in Alberta and Saskatchewan were interviewed and the results were analyzed through the framework of critical race theory (CRT). Findings suggest that library boards lack diversity, particularly in finding, recruiting, and training members who are truly representative of their community. Cultural sensitivity and cross-cultural training are important for board members to connect with their communities.L’objectif initial de cette étude était de savoir s’il y avait une quelconque diversité d’ethnicité, d’orientation sexuelle, de genre ou de handicap parmi les membres des conseils d’administration des bibliothèques publique...

Examples of academic profiles websites include Google Scholar Citations, ResearchGate, Academia.edu, and ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID). Recent years have seen an increasing adoption of these websites among researchers, mainly because of the perceived value for facilitating collaboration and boosting research impact. While librarians are providing assistance to researchers in developing profiles on these platforms, it is unknown how librarians themselves, as researchers, are using these tools. This project will investigate the presence on the academic profile websites amongst librarian researchers (i.e. librarians whose professional responsibilities include the requirement of conducting research) in the United States and Canada. The results from this project will provide a more complete understanding of academic profile we...

Over 7000 children and adolescents have been diagnosed and these numbers are continuing to increase. Due to the chronic, life long nature of IBD, more adolescents are transitioning from paediatric to adult healthcare environments than ever before. There is great need to ensure that adolescents are properly supported through this transitional period to ensure that their health outcomes are maximised. IBD nurses are integral members of the transition team; however, their perspectives on priority transition readiness factors are limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study was for Canadian IBD nurses to prioritise healthcare transition readiness assessment factors. Methods An anonymous survey was created and distributed to IBD nurses across Canada. Nine transition topic categories with several transition statements within each category were identified based on a previous scoping review and exp...

The custom search engine and subscribed links features of Google Coop are being used successfully by a variety of different businesses and libraries to help harness the power and size of the Web. Other organizations are contributing to specific search areas designed by Google using the topics feature. By examining the ways that such organizations are using Google Coop and by demonstrating how to use custom search engines and topics, we will draw some conclusions about the potential usefulness of Google Co-op's features for libraries.
The broad diversity and leadership landscape in the Canadian academic librarianship was assessed ... more The broad diversity and leadership landscape in the Canadian academic librarianship was assessed using a survey. The survey was designed using REDCap. It was piloted, translated into French, tested again, and electronically distributed via REDCap to English and French-speaking librarians across Canadian academic institutions. This paper represents a secondary analysis of collected data to determine whether the ethnic backgrounds of librarians have any influence on what they view as the most or least essential attributes in a leader. Secondary use of data means using data for a different purpose (from what it was collected for), sometimes by the same researcher to answer an additional or a new research question. Findings show a statistical significance between diversity and the leadership attribute "inspiring." This study encourages future library leadership education curriculum, training programs, and diversity residency programs to include "how to inspire" in cross-cultural and ethnic minority leadership contexts.

Indigenous people who live in rural and remote areas may also have difficulty accessing both information and care for their CKD. Informed decision making about treatment options for advancing kidney disease may be delayed, which can result in poor health outcomes and decreased quality of life. Moreover, Indigenous people may experience marginalization within Western health care systems. Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to identify culturally appropriate and co-developed Indigenous educational tools that will ultimately support CKD learning and end-stage kidney treatment decision making. Design: Scoping Review Setting: Databases included Embase, CINAHL, Medline (OVID), ERIC, and the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technology Gray Matters. Before I elaborate on the content of this issue, I want to highlight my learning and experience on working with CJAL editors. This issue would not have come to fruition without their help and support. I particularly want to thank Kristin Hoffmann for working like she was an extension of myself-she read and re-read every version of every paper and book review that was submitted and also helped in later stages as a copyeditor. If editors were paid, Kristin would be unaffordable, as she sacrificed numerous evenings and weekends over the last year to complete this project. In taking on this special issue, I knew there would be numerous challenges and extensive work involved in being an editor, but, most importantly, Kristin mentored me on the art of peer review to direct the authors and extract their best work, in their own words, so that the authors, editors, and readers can all be confident of the quality, validity, and soundness of the work published. Thank you also to Lisa Richmond, another CJAL editor, who kept us organized with all the reviewing and copyediting. I also want to thank Jane Schmidt, my insightful and truly liberal-minded colleague, for accepting my invitation to add to this first diversity issue of CJAL. Jane was also relentless in finding me the right reviewers for this issue. Finally, many thanks from the bottom of my heart to all the authors and reviewers. This journal issue is a sum of all your efforts. I hope your experience with CJAL was as irrefutably positive as mine.
