Ecuador is one of the major producers and exporters of tilapia to the United States. However, in the last years, shrimp is arriving to its maximum level of exports, making them even exceed banana exports in Ecuador. Costa Rica and Honduras, main Latin American exporters of tilapia, have the advantage of CAFTA agreement in which they have the benefit of tariff exonerations. China, for its recognition of aquaculture producer, is also considered as one of the main suppliers of tilapia to the United States. Ecuador in the other hand is granted with the benefit of the Most Favoured Nation Regime, establishing the country a tariff of 0.00%. The most part of tilapia consumption in the United States, is destined to Hispanics and Asians residing in the country. United States requires the registration of producers and Ecuadorian exporters in their institutions for a better control and record of the Ecuadorian product. Ecuador counts with organizations that provide certifications and quality inspections of tilapia, providing total confidence in its consumption. Similarly, the Ecuadorian customs requires exporters achieve with the correct compliance of the requirements, considering the levels of ecuadorian exportations and the exoneration of taxes, in order to encourage exports.
