In particular, the amenability of the James space J p is investigated; this space was first studied by R. C. James and was shown to be a Banach algebra for the pointwise product. Then a full classification of the closed ideals in J p is given, extending a result of N. J. Laustsen. Finally, some related algebras A α are considered, and it is established when these Banach algebras are amenable.

Mailed questionnaires were used to obtain information on 1171 newly diagnosed histologically confirmed stomach cancer cases and 2207 population controls between 1994 and 1997 in eight Canadian provinces. Data were collected on socio-economic status, lifestyle and passive smoking status. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were derived by logistic regression. Compared with those who had never smoked, there was strongly increased risk for ex- and current smokers among subjects with cardial stomach cancer. For men with cardial cancer, the adjusted ORs were 1.9 (95% CI 1.2-3.0) and 2.6 (95% CI 1.6-4.3) for ex-smokers and current smokers, respectively, with a similar pattern among women. Among men, the adjusted ORs were lower for subsites of stomach cancer other than cardia. These findings suggest that active and passive smoking may play an important role in the development of cardial stomach cancer.

Menadione is a superoxide anion donor that alters the heart's electrical and mechanical functions. The aim of this study was to demonstrate simultaneous changes in intracellular Ca 2+ ([Ca 2+ ]i) and mechanical activity in intact adult cardiac myocytes, and mechanical activity and electrical activity in isolated whole hearts in order to provide greater insight into the mechanisms associated with the detrimental effects of menadione on the myocardium. Isolated hearts from adult male Wistar rats (n = 11, 200-250 g) were Langendorff perfused at 38°C with a Krebs-Henseleit solution. A saline-filled balloon was placed in the left ventricle (LV) in order to measure diastolic and developed pressure. Monophasic action potentials were simultaneously recorded from the epicardial surface. External stimulation at 5 Hz and intrinsic pacing were used throughout a 10 min control period and 30 min exposure to 50 µM menadione. Single LV myocytes (n = 7 from n = 4 animals) were loaded with the Ca 2+-indicator Fura4-AM, stimulated at 1 Hz and exposed to 50 µM menadione. Myocyte length was simultaneously measured with [Ca 2+ ]i using a video edge detection system. In isolated hearts, exposure to menadione significantly decreased contractility and action potential duration (with a similar time course); intrinsic heart rate and rhythmicity. Diastolic pressure was significantly increased. In single adult myocytes, menadione caused a significant increase in diastolic [Ca 2+ ]i and a decrease in resting cell length and led to spontaneous release of [Ca 2+ ]i. We conclude that the effects of menadione upon electrical and mechanical activity of the heart are at least in part a consequence of dysregulation of [Ca 2+ ]i handling and the subsequent increase in diastolic [Ca 2+ ] alterations in [Ca 2+ ]i are consistent with the generation of delayed after depolarization arrhythmias.

Helicobacter pylori infection leads to an increased risk of developing gastric cancer. The mechanism through which this occurs is not known. We aimed to determine the effect of H. pylori and gastritis on levels of DNA damage in gastric epithelial cells.Methods. Epithelial cells were isolated from antral biopsies from 111 patients. DNA damage was determined using single cell gel electrophoresis and the proportion of cells with damage calculated before and 6 weeks after eradication of H. pylori. Cell suspensions generated by sequential digestions of the same biopsies were assayed to determine the effect of cell position within the gastric pit on DNA damage.Results. DNA damage was significantly higher in normal gastric mucosa than in H. pylori gastritis [median (interquartile range) 65% (58.5–75.8), n = 18 and 21% (11.9–29.8), n = 65, respectively, p < .001]. Intermediate levels were found in reactive gastritis [55.5% (41.3–71.7), n = 13] and H. pylori negative chronic g...

This study investigates how recent developments in the concep-tualization and measurement of these variables are related to each other and how they are related to aggressive and coercive behaviors. Second-generation measures of sexism and rape-supporting beliefs were found to be related to each other and to aggressive and sexu-ally coercive behaviors. Relationships between attitude measures appeared to be based primarily on shared belief systems, whereas relationships between attitude measures and aggressive behavior appeared to be based primarily on generalized hostility toward women.

Two indexes of the presence of the reactive oxygen species malondialdehyde and chemiluminescence were measured in biopsies taken from adjacent sites in the same patient. In general, plasma and mucosal concentrations of all antioxidants correlated well and were of a similar order of magnitude in plasma and mucosa. There was no significant difference between the slope of the regression lines nor an overall difference in the concentrations of these antioxidants between the H. pylon-positive and control groups, indicating an absence of effect of H. pylon infection. However, a marked difference was seen in chemiluminescence and malondialdehyde concentrations in biopsies. For chemiluminescence this was highly significant. These findings confirm the presence of free radicals in the mucosa of H. pylon-infected patients and suggest therefore that the lipid-soluble antioxidants have either no role in protecting mucosal cells from free radical damage or, if they are able to scavenge these species, they are then rapidly regenerated to their original forms by redox and other processes.

Each laboratory received a calibration solution, spiked urines and the corresponding unspiked urine. The two spiking levels for each biomarker were chosen by considering the levels naturally occurring in human urines and the limits of quantification of the LC-MS/MS methodologies used by the participating laboratories. The results of each laboratory were evaluated for their z-score values. The percentage of satisfactory z-scores (| z | < 2) were: 100% for deoxynivalenol, de-epoxy deoxynivalenol, aflatoxin M1, β-zearalenol and zearalenone, 87% for α-zearalenol, 50% for ochratoxin A and 42% for fumonisin B1. Good method performances were obtained for most biomarkers at the levels tested in this study, as demonstrated by the overall percentage of sa...

The authors studied self-reported dating aggression and sexual coercion in 147 college men. Men who had participated in aggressive high school sports, as compared with other men, engaged in more psychological aggression, physical aggression, and sexual coercion toward their dating partners, caused their partners more physical injury, were more accepting of violence, had more sexist attitudes and hostility toward women, were more accepting of rape myths, and were less tolerant of homosexuality. Results indicate that participation in aggressive high school sports is one of the multiple developmental pathways leading to relationship violence.
