There is limited information regarding diabetes self-care among diabetic patients in Eastern Uganda, where the disease is most prevalent. The aim of this study was to determine the level of adherence to diabetes mellitus self-care practices and the associated factors among adult diabetic outpatients at a tertiary hospital in Eastern Uganda. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in Eastern Uganda between September and October 2020, on a sample of 156 diabetic patients recruited through systematic random sampling. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data through self-report. Descriptive and Logistic regression analyses were conducted using STATA version 15.0, and a 5% level of significance. Most of the study participants were female (63.8%) with an average age of 52.3 y...

Integration of social determinants into clinical practice is an emerging attractive phenomenon be... more Integration of social determinants into clinical practice is an emerging attractive phenomenon because of its potential benefits to the health system and patients however inadequate understanding of the barriers and facilitators poses immense challenges in designing programs and interventions aimed at enhancing integration of social determinants into clinical practice. This study investigated the barriers and facilitators to integration of social determinants into clinical practice in hospitals in Uganda. Data was collected from 21 key informants using a key informant guide that covered various aspects of integration of social determinants into clinical practice. The study identified barriers and facilitators at institutional and health-worker associated barriers. These barriers were at patient, departmental and community levels. There were similarities and differences in the barrier’s ad facilitators observed in this study and those articulated in literature. More so this study rev...

This was cross-sectional. Data was collected from 1042 health workers using a self-administered questionnaire. The factors influencing integration were elucidated using multiple regression modeling. The final model of the influencing factors contained the factor domains health worker confidence, hospital environment, health worker attitude, adoption level for strategies of integration, disease characteristics, and accreditation to the Nurses and Midwives Council. The study successfully elucidated the model for factors influencing the integration of social determinants into clinical practice. The findings have educational, practice, administrative, and policy implications. The multi-method approach was used to limit social desirability bias among health workers; however, the study did not adjust for c...

This will provide a baseline for improvement interventions and act as a starting point for elucidating the factors influencing the integration of social determinants into clinical practice. This was a multi-method cross-sectional study conducted at 12 hospitals in Uganda. Data was collected between September and November 2021 involving 1042 health workers, 21 key informants, 2119 medical records, and six focus groups. The extent of integration was measured using an eight-item Likert scale for health workers (Cronbach’s alpha of 0.794, inter-item correlation 0.15 to 0.5;) 24-item Likert scale for key informants (Cronbach’s alpha was 0.973, inter-item correlation 0.18 to 0.936), and medical records. The study was approved by the research and ethics committee of Makerere University School of Health Sciences and by the Texila American University Faculty an...

The study period included the year before the COVID-19 pandemic (2019) and the first year of the pandemic (2020). In total 1,919 medicine samples were screened using the GPHF Minilab, and samples showing serious quality deficiencies were subjected to compendial analysis in fully equipped laboratories. Thirty-four (1.8%) of the samples were found not to contain the declared active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), or less than 50% of the declared API, or undeclared APIs, and probably represented falsified products. Fifty-four (2.8%) of the samples were reported as substandard, although the true number of substandard medicines may have been higher due to the limited sensitivity of the GPHF Minilab. The number of probably falsified products increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially...

Proposed algorithm is obtained by combining particle swarm optimization (PSO), Cauchy mutation and an evolutionary selection strategy. The idea is to introduce the Cauchy mutation into PSO in the hope of preventing PSO from trapping into a local optimum through long jumps made by the Cauchy mutation. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed Better-Quality Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO) algorithm, it has been tested on IEEE 57 bus system. Simulation Results show's that BPSO is more efficient than other reported algorithms in reducing the real power loss.

The study determined the level of client satisfaction, the factors associated with client satisfaction, and variation of client satisfaction across touch points within the hospital. Methodology: This was a cross-section descriptive hospital-based study. Data was collected from a sample of 100 clients using exit interview method. Results: The client satisfaction index was 83.9% and net promoter score 76%. The number of prior visits, waiting time, hospital charges, and age of the client were significantly associated with client satisfaction as was assistance to client and professional conduct at key touch points. Client satisfaction at individual touch points was also significantly associated with overall client satisfaction. There was no significant association between gender, religion, and marital status, level of education and means of t...
