While selective adsorption of carbon dioxide has recently attracted special interest due to conce... more While selective adsorption of carbon dioxide has recently attracted special interest due to concerns over greenhouse emissions, separation of methane from its mixtures with carbon dioxide and nitrogen is a key operation for biogas and natural gas enrichment. Herein we present a detailed study of the multicomponent potential theory of adsorption's (MPTA) capabilities to predict published experimental adsorption data of binary and ternary mixtures of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen from each gas' pure component adsorption data on activated carbons Norit R1 and Calgon F-400 and on the metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) MOF-508b and MOF-5. It is observed that at temperatures below its critical temperature (304 K), and pressures in the vicinity of its critical pressure (7.37 MPa), carbon dioxide content in the binary mixtures adsorbed on Norit R1 has significant influence on the accuracy of MPTA's predictions, as sharp mixture density increases due to possible carbon dioxide phase changes cause convergence difficulties in the model's numerical iterations. This phenomenon is not observed in the studied ternary mixtures' case. Here, discrepancies are rather attributed to the inherent limitations of using four adjustable parameters to describe multicomponent adsorption at high pressure, and to the additive errors associated with the volumetric experimental measurement technique. Carbon dioxide's high selectivity due to its strong quadrupole moment is well predicted by the MPTA, on activated carbon as well as on MOFs.

CD24 is a membrane protein that acts as the ligand for Pselectin and has been defined as a stem cell marker of colonic cancer. The immunohistochemical expression of CD24 is associated with worse patient outcomes in small cell lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer, and colon cancer. In this study, we used immunohistochemistry to determine CD24 expression in clear cell, papillary and chromophobe renal cell carcinoma and investigated its relationship with other clinicopathological parameters and prognosis. A total of 108 cases of clear cell, 12 papillary and 13 choromophobe renal cell carcinoma were examined. Clinicopathological features including age, gender, vascular invasion, tumor necrosis, and T stage were recorded. Clinical stage and overall survival and disease-free survival times were recorded. The immunohistochemical expression of CD24 was classified as low or high based on the percentage and intensity of positive staining. CD24 expression was associated with both tumor grade and recurrence rates. The survival analysis revealed that patients with high CD24 expression exhibited significantly lower overall and disease-free survival. Increased expression of CD24 is related to the prognosis of clear cell renal cell carcinoma. This is the first study identifying a strong association between CD24 expression levels and survival. Thus, CD24 expression may aid in predicting prognosis in clear cell renal cell carcinoma.

This prospective study was conducted to examine the factors that affect swallowing during thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). Methods. Consecutive patients who were to undergo FNAB were approached for inclusion in the study. The depth and size of the nodule were measured in all patients. In a random fashion, patients were told not to swallow during the procedure, or they were not given any instructions regarding swallowing. Results. Regarding the 143 participants in the study, no significant differences in age (P = .07), diameter and depth of the thyroid nodules (P = .14; P = .46, respectively), or cytologic diagnosis of thyroid aspirates (P > .20) were found between the swallowing (n = 50) and nonswallowing (n = 93) patient groups. Swallowing was observed in 29 patients who were instructed not to swallow (36%) and in 21 patients who were not given any instructions regarding swallowing (34%; P = .95). The mean duration of the procedure for swallowing patients was 19.8 seconds, and it was 15.7 seconds for nonswallowing patients. The duration of the procedure was significantly shorter in patients who did not swallow (P = .001). More male patients swallowed than female patients (P = .003). Conclusions. Giving specific instructions about not swallowing did not make a difference regarding swallowing by patients during the FNAB procedure. More male patients swallowed than female patients. A longer duration of the FNAB procedure meant that the operator was more likely to encounter swallowing (and thus displacement of the thyroid) while doing the procedure. Completing the procedure quickly is the surest method to avoid a moving thyroid while performing FNAB.

In the irreversible jaundiced groups, the common bile duct was explorated, double ligated, and cut. 150 μg/kg/day HGF, 5 μg/kg/day EGF, 5 μg/kg/day IGF, and 5 μg/kg/day TGF β-1 were injected intraperitoneally after the seventh post-operative day. In the reversible jaundiced group, the common bile duct was ligated and the ligation was resolved on the seventh post-operative day. For 5 days, growth factors were injected at the same dose. Ductal proliferation scores significantly decreased after growth factor administration in the EGF-A and TGF-A groups. Furthermore, ductal proliferation was decreased in the TGF-B group. As a result of this study, HGF was effective in the irreversible jaundiced groups and ineffective in the reversible jaundice groups. EGF was effective in the reversible jaundiced groups and ineffective in the irreversible jaundiced groups. In both the irreversible jaundiced and reversible jaundiced groups, IGF was ineffective, although TGF β-1 was effective. We believe that these results arise from the positive effects of effective doses of growth factor on liver damage.

The aim of this study is to determine the role of EBUS-TBNA in patients with peribronchial/peritracheal mass without endobronchial lesion suspected for bronchogenic carcinoma and patients with a diameter of mediastinal/hilar lympadenopathy bigger than 1 cm in CT, prediagnosed as bronchogenic carcinoma. Between April 2010 and January 2011, 56 patients with mean age 60,8 years (47 M/9 F) were admitted to study. EBUS-TBNA was performed to only lymph node in 47 patients, both lymph node and mass in 5 patients and only mass 4 patients. The definite diagnosis was done in twenty five patients without endobronchial lesion. Ninety six out of ninety seven lymph node aspiration was positive (70 mediastinal/27 hilar). One patient diagnosed with mediastinoscopy. (Sensitivity 98,9%, specificity 100%, PPV 100%, NPV 67% and accuracy 98,9%) Twelve N3 lymph node were positive for malignancy.Seven out of nine mass biopsy were diagnosed as malignant. Two patients were diagnosed with other diagnostic procedures. No complication was observed during EBUS-TBNA. In conclusion, EBUS-TBNA seemed a safe and effective technique in making bronchogenic carsinoma diagnosis for mediastinal/hilar lymph nodes and intrapulmonary masses.

The histopathological diagnosis of adrenocortical carcinoma is difficult due to the lack of precise diagnostic criteria for malignancy. A 44-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with left flank pain. radiologically an adrenal mass was detected. After the excision and histopathologic evaluation of the mass, a diagnosis of adrenocortical oncocytic carcinoma was made. At least one of the features of more than 5 mitoses in 50 high power fields, atypical mitotic figures or venous invasion is required for the diagnosis of malignancy in adrenocortical tumors. It has been suggested that tumors that have more than one of the minor criteria of large size (>10 cm or >200 gr), necrosis, capsular or sinusoidal invasion, should be evaluated as having uncertain malignant potential.

However, the prognostic value of intratumoral CRP expression has not been sufficiently studied. Patients and Methods: In the present study, the expression of CRP was evaluated with immunohistochemical analysis in 127 patients who had undergone curative surgery for clear cell renal cell carcinoma. CRP staining was scored using the immunoreactivity score. An immunoreactivity score of 4 (median value) or lower was considered negative, a score higher than 4 was considered positive CRP expression. Results: Univariate analysis revealed that Fuhrman grade, necrosis, vascular invasion, TNM stage and CRP expression were associated with tumor-specific survival. Multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazards regression method revealed only TNM stage as an independent predictor of tumor-specific survival (p = 0.001). A trend ...

A trend ...
