First is to find the correlation of the following variables: Government insensitivity to education needs; Public and private open encouragement of low productivity; Lack of spirit of hard work among students; Lack of adequate study habit skills; in education delivery in Nigeria. These variables have been shown to affect educational delivery service. Second is their predictive power on educational delivery service. The perceptions of lecturers, principals, teachers and students regarding these variables were captured by applying both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The main instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire, which consisted mainly of closed-ended questions and four open-ended questions. For the closed-ended questions the Likert scale was used. Results show that when government insensitivity, Low productivity, student input and study habits were correlated with educational delivery, government insensitivity had an r va...

Cult recruiters often targeted to obtain their affluent parents' money. However, we now witness a gradual transition to the recruitment of the less affluent and less educated. Recruitment of members of minority groups has increased. Members now come from every ethnic and religious background and include adults, middle-aged, elderly, and children. Entire families join or develop within a group, and children are born into and raised within them. The problems of cultism in Nigerian tertiary institutions are legion. It is difficult to focus attention on all the facets of the plague. Thus, the focus of this article is five-fold; namely to: Highlight the emergence of cults in Nigerian tertiary institutions; Discuss how members are recruited into the cults; Describe the initiation ceremonies; Assess the problems created by the cults; and Examine their counselling implications, ways and means of preventing students from joining the cults.

This disorder involves the inheritance of two abnormal genes, which are related to the hemoglobin promotion, at least, one of which is the sickle cell gene. Nigeria, by virtue of her large population, has the greatest number of sufferers of SCD in the world. The prevalence has been found to be 10 persons with SCD per 1,000 population or 2%. This study assessed the knowledge and attitude of Nigerian adolescents to premarital genotyping and its counseling implications. Questionnaires sought to assess the knowledge of students about the presentation, acquisition, and method of diagnosis of sickle cell disease; determine the proportion of students who know their genotype; determine the acceptability of genetic counseling among students; and determine the effect of the knowledge and mode of acquisition would have on marital choice and childbearing intentions. Introduction The desire for a positive evaluation of self affects a person's feelings, action... more Introduction The desire for a positive evaluation of self affects a person's feelings, actions, and aspirations throughout life. School experiences play an important role in the development of self-perceptions in the course of childhood and adolescence and this can have powerful long-term effects on an individual's self concept; yet most proposals for school improvement and reform emphasize either teachers, administrators, parents, or class size, overlooking one of the most crucial change agents--the students. All of this is contrary to the peer principle, which believes that deep, lasting changes, individually and structurally, must ultimately come from sharing with like individuals. The effectiveness of the use of peer counsellors within the school system has been well documented in foreign literature (Hsiao-Chen, 2003; Ladyshewsky 2001; Hoffman and Warner, 1976). Gartner and Riessman (1998) in their study proposed the application of the peer counselling principle in schoo...

The sample for this study consisted of 20 parents (male and female) purposively selected from Benin City, Edo State. The instrument, titled „Knowledge of Managing Autism among Parents Questionnaire‟ (KMAPAQ), containing 25 structured questions, was developed and employed by the researchers. Two hypotheses were tested. Data collected were analyzed using independent t-test. The results showed that there was significant difference between parents‟ in the experimental and control groups‟ knowledge of managing autism. The mean score of parents‟ experimental group was 91.40; greater than 58.70 mean score of the control group. A significant difference did not exist between male and female parents knowledge of managing autism. (t cal =0 .585, t cal =0. 589; p >.05). On the basis of the findings, it was suggested that parent...

This paper is focused on Understanding of the DSM-1V-TR by Counsellors. Uninformed labelling of persons with the diagnosis symptoms of any of the disorder in the DSM-1V-TR gave rise to this paper. Presently not much attention has been given to persons especially children who manifest symptoms of any behavioural disorder even when they go through difficulties in the learning process. It was recommended that Counsellors should be taught the use of the DSM-1V-TR to enable them give adequate support to anyone who may suffer symptoms of any disorder in the learning process. Counsellors will also be competent to make appropriate referral when necessary. There is an urgent need to include in the curriculum of Counselling psychology in our institut...

In addition, three secondary independent variables were studied along. These were entry test anxiety level, sex, and locus of control. A 2 x 2 x 2 way factorial design was employed. SD was found effective in the reduction of test anxiety of the students who were test anxious F-ratio = 9.261 with df (1,74). Entry test anxiety level of subjects was found to be significant on the level of reduction of test anxiety students F = 27.458 with df (1,74). Sex had no significant effect on the reduction of test anxiety of students F = 0.079 with df of (1, 74) and p > 0.05. There was no significant interaction effect of therapy and secondary independent variables. However, there was a significant interaction effect of entry test anxiety level and therapy at the end of treatment. Since SD has been found to be effective in the reduction of tes...

It is rampant in the North and the Eastern parts of Nigeria due to the forced marriage of girls at about the age of eleven. This may be attributed to their small pelvises which have resulted in harmful reproductive health practice. The disability and suffering from obstetric fistula remains a neglected issue in global health. Aim : This study seeks to explore the conceptual knowledge of vesico-vagina fistula (VVF) among parents, teachers and counselors of senior secondary school students in Warri South local government area of Delta state. Methods : A survey design was used. Random sampling method was used to select a total number of six hundred respondents including parents, teachers and counselors that participated in the study, but only five hundred and eleven questionnaires were retrieved. They were exposed to treatments in four fixed levels. Three of the subject groups were exposed to career intervention strategies, while the fourth group was exposed to a non-specific treatment (drug abuse). The design is a 4 x 2 factorial with fixed effect consisting of initial/entry career behaviour (high & low) and treatment/control groups. Data d erived from the post treatment were subjected to 2-way analysis of variance. The results of the study show that despite entry career maturity level, the main effect of treatment on students\' competence in self-appraisal was significant. Career week was the most effective for fostering competence in self-appraisal, followed by career games and bibliotherapy. Based on the findings of this study, career week was recommended as the most suitable of these three techniques for fostering self-appraisal in Nigerian schools environment and that initial/entry career maturity behaviour must not be ignored during career intervention strategies. Research is needed to constantly evaluate smoking prevalence in particular settings like Nigeria with projections of increasing smoking uptake. This study examined the smoking behaviour of the young people in Southern Nigeria in relation to their demographic and socio-economic attributes like gender, age, employment status and educational attainment. Intentions to quit and quit attempts of current smokers were also explored. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 550 respondents aged 18–24 years in three categories: students, skilled and unskilled workers using a modified version of the global youth tobacco survey questionnaire. Chi-square tests were used to explore associations between relevant variables. Participants were recruited using a multi-stage non-probability sampling technique. The software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19 was used in the analysis of the data. Prevalence of active smokers was 29.7% (n = 160) while 40% (n = 224) of the respondents had experimented with smoking. Nearly half of the smokers (43.8%, n = 70) smoke between two and five cigarettes per day. Smokers were more likely to be males, unskilled workers and reside in or come from the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria. About a third of current smokers (34.4%, n = 55) indicated an intention to quit while 39.4% (n = 63) attempted to quit in the year prior to the study. There is an urgent need to implement the National Tobacco Control Act 2015 in Nigeria. This will reduce youth access and stop the targeted marketing of young people by Tobacco multinationals in Nigeria.

This qualitative study involved a purposive sample of 18 young smokers aged 18-24 years. Data were collected using individual interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Following the TTI, factors found to influence young people's initiation and perpetuation of smoking included at the intrapersonal level, sensation seeking, hedonic attitudes and poor coping skills; young smokers engage in cigarettes smoking to cope with social and psychological challenges like stress, worries, to aid digestion and for relaxation. At the interpersonal level, smokers were influenced by their peers and significant others like parents, brothers, teachers and mentors. Immediate risk influences for smoking included experimentation with cigarettes and the use of other substances like marijuana and alcohol. Intervention programmes targeted at building life skills and the ability to resist the pressure from peers and significant others to smoke are needed.
