Pipelines pass through various terrains and highly challenging environments hence the need for both internal and external coatings to prevent corrosion and its adverse effects. In order to improve on the longevity of pipelines and the adhesion of the coating system, it is preferable to conversion coat blasted surfaces prior to application of any coating system. Improvements in pipeline coatings applications and the often neglected chromating procedure prior to coating application have been highlighted. This will prolong the lifespan of pipeline networks and secure these strategic assets from being a source of both materials and human resources drain pipes. However, the use of corrosion resistant alloys as internal lining for carbon steel pipes in the petroleum/gas industry is fast gaini...

Several fish meal pelletizing machines have been designed and developed in Nigeria. This study is to contribute to the improvement of existing design models through designing, fabricating and performing evaluation tests on the machine. The average discharge efficiency, percentage loss due to residue ingredients and production rate for the machine under study after four runs for 5 kg fish meal ingredients weight was processed for 2.5 minutes was 92.25 %, 7.75 % and 110.7 kg/hr, respectively. It was discovered that as the drying days increase, the percentage moisture content removal increases for the two categories of pelletized fish meal weight (4.6 kg and 4.65 kg) considered while the weight of the pelletized fish meal reduces after drying. Linear regression models were derived for the two pelletized fish meal categories so that at any particular day, an estimated value of percentage moisture content r...

Phytochemical analysis was done to determine the qualitative tests of the extract. The factor variables used for the Central Composite design were Temperature 30-60, Time: 1-5 h and Concentration: 0.2-1.0 g/L respectively. The analysis showed that a linear effect of the process variables was highly significant. The optimum conditions predicted were Temp: 54.65oC, Time: 2.54 h and Concentration: 0.33 g/l; and the optimum corrosion rate condition was predicted 1.0 (mg/〖cm〗^2 h). The experimental value of 1.5 (mg/〖cm〗^2 h) agreed closely with that obtained from the regression model. This study revealed that Katemfe seed extract is a good inhibitor for the corrosion of Mild steel in 0.5M HCl and the performance can be improved by moderating the process variables.

Worm gears as a type of gear are widely used for transmitting power at high velocity ratios between non-intersecting shafts. Worm gears are very useful in machine design but its design requires a lot of design assumptions and calculations. To achieve a rapid design devoid of errors, there is need to have a customized computer program capable of designing worm gears using standardized design equations; and that is what WormCAD stands for. The software was designed using JavaScript programming language and the Node.js platform. The WormCAD was tested to be accurate, faster and convenient hence it will be a viable software to be used by worm gear designers.

The coating developed slowly on a microscopic metal substrate with islands of zirconium-rich centres within the coating matrix. According to the TEM assessment, the coating thickness was 30 nm for specimens treated for 60 s and 50 nm for those treated for 900 s. The population of the zirconium-rich centers ranged from 2.8 × 10 12 m-2 to 6 × 10 12 m-2 over the treatment period. According to Auger-electron-spectroscopy in-depth analyses, the coating is composed of three diffused layers with an outer region of zirconium oxide followed by a layer of aluminium oxide/hydroxide and an inner layer at the metal/coating interface comprising compounds of aluminium and fluorides. The corrosion-resistance and paint-adhesion characteristics of the zirconium conversion coating are superior to those of bare aluminium.

This study therefore contributes to the improvement of existing models of this machine by designing, fabricating and evaluating the performance of a new pelletizer. After fabrication, 5 kg fish feed ingredients weight was processed for 2.5 minutes in the machine in quadruplicate. The average discharge efficiency, percentage loss due to residue ingredients and production rate for the machine are 92.25 %, 7.75 % and 110.7 kg/h, respectively. The results showed that an increase in drying days led to a corresponding increase in percentage moisture content removal with a similar reduction in the weight of the pelletized fish meal. This machine will be of great assistant to medium and small-scale aquaculture farmers, thereby reducing the need for foreign sources of fish feed in fish farming sector.

This review summarises the effects of various environmental pollutants which promote deterioration of concretes with resultant corrosion of reinforcing bar (rebar). An overview of traditional and current methods for significant reduction of this mode of material deterioration is described. Discussions on management tools for rebar corrosion in agricultural and marine environments have been highlighted. Repair methods include the traditional application of patch repair mortar which has been modified with polymeric materials to improve adhesion and reduce porosity. The use of cathodic protection system to reduce rebar corrosion to its barest minimum has gained currency. Attention should be directed at corrosion reduction practices at the design and planning stages as well as modification concrete mixes with modified agricultural wastes/products and polymers.

Conversion coating on aluminium/0.2%Fe alloy developed from a zirconium nitrate/fluoride solution... more Conversion coating on aluminium/0.2%Fe alloy developed from a zirconium nitrate/fluoride solution has been examined with scanning electron (SEM) and transmission electron microscopes (TEM) with attached energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) facilities. Zirconium-rich islands of thicker sections were observed in the SEM. The thin sections from the transmission micrographs revealed undulating metal/coating and coating/solution interfaces. This is consistent with anode/cathode reactions in the formation and growth of conversion coatings on metals, especially aluminium alloys. The coating comprises of zirconium rich surface which is contaminated or otherwise with aluminium and other species from the coating solution.

The corrosion rates with and without the addition of 0.3g of hydrolyzed feather per 100 ml of drilling mud were 1.70 and 1.95 mm/yr, respectively; which corresponded to inhibition efficiency of 13% over the immersion period. The corresponding charge transfer resistances, a measure of corrosion rates were 1480.4 and 1780.0 Ω, respectively; in the uninhibited and hydrolyzed-feather inhibited environments. The voltage over the double layer capacitor as obtained from the polarization studies numerically increased from À0.907 to À0.948 V which indicated adsorption of moieties in the inhibitor and probably some corrosion products on the surface of the mild steel specimen.

A golden coloured coating on aluminium specimen was obtained from the permanganate coating (PMC) bath with nominal pH of 7.9. Results from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination showed that the conversion coatings are continuous, and the surfaces of the specimens treated in the coating bath are composed of irregularly shaped and mud-cracked coating materials. The coatings, as revealed from energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) analyses in the SEM are composed essentially of aluminium, oxygen and manganese compounds which are likely to be hydrated. Accelerated corrosion tests in near neutral 3.5% sodium chloride solution and natural exposure tests revealed that the replacement of chromate with permanganate improved paint adhesion and corrosion resistance on aluminium substrates. Furthermore, the results indicated that the corrosion resistance of the permanganate-based conversion coating matched those from the traditional chromate coating bath, but for the corrosion resistance, after application of a top coat of lacquer, the former was adjudged better than the later.

Their degree of degradation is more critical, especially at elevated temperatures and mechanical loading conditions. This study presents the effect of component standoff height (CSH) on the shear strength reliability of ball grid array solder joints under different pad sizes. Investigation of the impact of standoff height on the mechanical reliability of the solder joint of ball grid array components under different pad sizes was conducted in this work. Isothermal ageing of test samples were conducted at 150 °C for 8 days. This study focuses on establishing the relationship between CSH and shear strength of the solder joints under different pad sizes and the corresponding effect of prolonged elevated temperature conditions on the mechanical integrity of the soldered joints. The work also identifies the failure mode and examines the region of the failed joints and surfaces to provide information on the morphological characteristics of the material microstructure. The results of this study demonstrate that the smallest pad size (19 mil) gave the lowest shear strength of 61.08 MPa with a high standoff height of 0.25 mm as compared to the largest pad size (24 mil) with the highest shear strength of 70.43 MPa having a relatively low standoff height of 0.22 mm.
