Both local and international cases involving collapse or excessive deformation of the ground are included. For contractual and other reasons, there are relatively few cases reported in technical publications, and those reported are usually of such scale or seriousness that they have received public attention. Even for the cases reported, usually only limited information is available. Apart from the cases included, readers can find other information on tunnel failure in the list of Bibliography given at the end of this catalogue.

It is intended to supplement the NTIS and provide the specifications for coding data required to be submitted to the National Tunnel Inventory (NTI). Data in the NTI will be used to meet legislative reporting requirements and provide tunnel owners, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the general public with information on the number and condition of the Nation's tunnels.
The purpose of each scan and of Project 20-68A as a whole is to accelerate beneficial innovation ... more The purpose of each scan and of Project 20-68A as a whole is to accelerate beneficial innovation by facilitating information sharing and technology exchange among the states and other transportation agencies, and identifying actionable items of common interest. Experience has shown that personal contact with new ideas and their application is a particularly valuable means for such sharing and exchange. A scan entails peer-to-peer discussions between practitioners who have implemented new practices and others who are able to disseminate knowledge of these new practices and their possible benefits to a broad audience of other users. Each scan addresses a single technical topic selected by AASHTO and the NCHRP 20-68A Project Panel. Further information on the NCHRP 20-68A U.S. Domestic Scan program is available at

With the advantages of using immersed tube technique across harbour/rivers, more immersed tunnels are to be constructed in Hong Kong and Korea. The Busan-Geoje Link in South Korea under construction now consists of a 3.2km length of IMT with water depth of over 35m. Many new techniques have been developed for this mega project. This paper calls for the development of design theory and construction technology and summarises the historical development of immersed tunnels in Hong Kong and recent development of the construction techniques in Korea.
