This symptom, often called “brain fog”, affects the life quality of numerous individuals, increasing medical complications as well as healthcare expenditures. The etiopathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2-induced cognitive deficit is unclear, but the most likely cause is chronic inflammation maintained by a viral remnant thriving in select body reservoirs. These viral sanctuaries are likely comprised of fused, senescent cells, including microglia and astrocytes, that the pathogen can convert into neurotoxic phenotypes. Moreover, as the enteric nervous system contains neurons and glia, the virus likely lingers in the gastrointestinal tract as well, accounting for the intestinal symptoms of long COVID. The study of the exposome requires consideration of both the nature of those exposures and their changes over time, and as such necessitates high quality data and software solutions. As the exposome is both a broad and a recent concept, it is challenging to define or to introduce in a structured way. Thus, an approach to assist with clear definitions and a structured framework is needed for the wider scientific and public communication. Additional insight was gained after the discoveries of innate lymphoid cells in 2008 and the functional elucidation of mucosal mast cells. The advent of high-throughput technologies has further supported the creation of biobanks globally. However, the same rate of growth has not occurred in the field of infectious diseases, where biobanks are significantly fewer as compared to other scientific fields such as oncology. This narrative review presents the main aspects that need to be taken into consideration for the construction and application of biological sample infrastructure for infectious diseases, with a number of examples taken from the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite tremendous economic and healthcare devastation, research on this virus has contributed to a better understanding of numerous molecular pathways, including those involving γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), that will positively impact medical science, including neuropsychiatry, in the post-pandemic era. SARS-CoV-2 primarily enters the host cells through the renin–angiotensin system’s component named angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2). Among its many functions, this protein upregulates GABA, protecting not only the central nervous system but also the endothelia, the pancreas, and the gut microbiota. SARS-CoV-2 binding to ACE-2 usurps the neuronal and non-neuronal GABAergic systems, contributing to the high comorbidity of neuropsychiatric illness with gut dysbiosis and endothelial and metabolic dysfunctions. Background: We aim to present the development and the initial results of the Golestan Cancer Biob... more Background: We aim to present the development and the initial results of the Golestan Cancer Biobank (GoCB), in a low resource setting in northern Iran. Methods: The GoCB protocol and its standard operation procedures (SOP) were developed according to internationally accepted standards and protocols with some modifications considering the limited resources in our setting. The main biological samples collected by the GoCB include blood sample, urine sample, fresh endoscopy tissue sample, fresh surgical tissue sample and formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue sample. The GoCB collects patients' demographic data, tumor characteristics as well as data on risk factors. We developed a specific GoCB software for management of patient data and biological sample information. The GoCB dataset is annually linked with the Golestan cancer registry dataset to add complementary data (e.g., survival data). Results: The GoCB started collection of data and biological samples in December 2016. By November 2020, a total number of 1217 cancer patients participated in the GoCB. The majority of the GoCB participants (n = 942, 77%) were those with gastrointestinal and breast cancers. Data on risk factors were successfully collected in 684 (56.2%) of the participants. Overall, 3563 samples were collected from the GoCB participants and 730 samples were used in 7 national and international research projects. Conclusion: We considered specific strategies to overcome major limitations, especially budget shortage, in the development and maintenance of a cancer-specific biological repositories in our setting. The GoCB may be considered as a model for the development of biobank in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The virus upregulates host angiotensin II (ANG II) (via S1 antigen), usurps furin/plasmin (via S2 antigen), mitochondria (via ORF9b), and Sigma-1 receptors (Sig-1Rs) via NSP6. These structures, previously associated with PTSD, link the SARS-CoV-2 virus to increased susceptibility for stress related disorders. As ECs are major producers of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neurotrophin altered in PTSD, senescent ECs lower this molecule further, predisposing to stress related disorders.

First, I was honored, along with ISBER President Zisis Kozlakidis, President-elect David Lewandowski, Andrew Brooks, and others to attend and make presentations at the Biobank Branch, China Medicinal Biotech Association (BBCMBA) conference in Shanghai from March 29 to 31. This was a special 10th anniversary celebration of BBCMBA, attracting wide participation from the Chinese biobanking community and hosted by Professor Hengjun Gao, Head of BBCMBA. More recently, as detailed in an ISBER press release on April 20, ISBER and BBCMBA entered into an affiliation agreement that highlights several joint initiatives:

Background: To date, the clinical characteristics of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19)-infected u... more Background: To date, the clinical characteristics of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19)-infected urologic cancer patients are unknown. Methods: We have analyzed all patients with prostate cancer undergoing hormonal or chemotherapy treatment and receiving telephone and in person pre-triage between March 1 and 27, 2020, at the Tortora Hospital, Pagani, Italy. Results: Among 72 patients, 48 and 24 were hormone-sensitive (HS) and castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), respectively; 0 HS and 2 (8.3%) CRPC (p < 0.05) were positive for COVID-19. Both patients were receiving LHRH agonist therapy, and 1 patient was receiving enzalutamide. Urgent intensive care unit admission was required due to clinical worsening. Blood tests showed severe lymphopenia, anemia, and an increase in platelets. Retroviral therapy, antibiotics, heparin, and chloroquine were prescribed at the beginning.
