Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in 140 countries. The widespread use of medicinal plants is not limited to the developing countries, there’s a renewed interest by the public and scientific organisations concerning plants and cure for diseases. The increasing cost of modern health care has made the role of ethnomedicine a very important one. A majority of the Nigerian population use traditional medicine for relief from various ailments largely due to inadequate medical facilities, high poverty rate and many other socio‐ economic/ socio‐ cultural factors. Local herbalists claim the possession of remedies useful in curing different cancer types. However, such knowledge is secretive and kept within close family circle. This work is aimed at providing an inventory of North East Nigerian plants with anti‐ breast cancer potentials for future verification and scientific validation. Semi‐structured questionnaire and...

Established colorimetric methods were used to investigate the antioxidants and the quantitative phytochemicals of the extracts. The study revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids and phenolics in all the three extracts, tannins is lacking in Chrysophyllum albidum while all the extract were tested negative for saponins. Z. mauritiania had the highest flavonoids and total phenolic contents with values of 87.03 ± 0.02 mg/g QE and 65.76 ± 0.03 mg/g GAE respectively. Z. spina christii showed the highest vitamin C content 409.20 mg/100g, while, Z. mauritiania had the least 48.4 mg/100g of the three extr...

The objective of this work is to estimate the contents of free glucose, fructose, sucrose and fructans in commonly consumed vegetables in Maiduguri metropolis of North East Nigeria. The Megazyme assay kits were used to extract and quantify the free sugar and the fructan contents of the vegetables. All the vegetables with the exception of Garlic contained varying amounts of free glucose ranging from 0.1 – 9.34 g/100g of the samples. Free fructose was not detected in Sesame leaves ( Sesamum indica ), coffee senna ( Senna occidentalis ), baobab leaves, Mormodica charantia , Moringa oleifera leaves an...
