This makes the hedge algebra based approach to the word semantics quite different from the existing approaches and become the only approach that can immediately deal with the natural qualitative semantics of words. We explain clearly and systematically distinguished features and properties of this approach to show that these seem to make the approach to be sound and ensure its effectiveness in applications. This approach seems to be promising for development of hedge algebra-based method to solve problems in various application fields. In this approach, each linguistic domain can be considered as a hedge algebra (HA for short) and based on the structure of HAs, a notion of fuzziness measure of linguistic hedges and terms can be defined. In order to apply hedge algebras to those problems, the results of which are needed, a notion of semantically quantifying mappings (SQMs) will be introduced. It shown that there is a closed connection between SQMs and fuzziness measure of hedge and primary terms (the generators of linguistic domains). To show the applicability of this approach, new methods to solve a Fuzzy Multiple Conditional Reasoning problem, the problem of Balancing an Inverted Pendulum will be presented.

There were 116 females and 84 males. Of the 200 patients, 111 (55.5%) were diagnosed as being H. pylori positive. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the Stick test were 84.7%, 89.9%, and 87.0%, respectively. There were 17 (8.5%) falsenegative patients and 9 (4.5%) false-positive patients. CONCLUSION: The Rapirun ® Stick test has high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection in the Vietnamese population. The test can be clinically applied in Vietnamese populations.

In the proposed control scheme, both the iron losses and the magnetic saturation are taken into account and calculated online. The main objective is to keep the DC voltage across the capacitor constant and equal to the reference value, regardless of changes in the rotor speed and load. The study is mainly focused on the DC voltage control and, more specifically, on selection of the appropriate DC voltage controller. Besides considering widely accepted types of controllers, i.e., the classical PI controller and the fuzzy logic (FL) controller, this paper proposes an alternative solutiona new type of DC voltage controller based on hedge algebra. To our best knowledge, this is the first time that such a controller is considered for application in electrical engineering. The performance of the developed hedge algebra (HA) controller is evaluated through comparison with the optimal-tuned classical PI controller and the Sugeno-type FL controller. The simulation and experimental analysis are carried out in reasonably wide ranges of the DC voltage, load and rotor speed, including the case of a variable rotor speed. It is shown that the proposed HA controller provides superior performance in terms of tracking the reference DC voltage value as well as robustness to speed and load disturbances in the system.

This enzyme was recently identified as a potential anticancer target; its inhibition leads to an increase in reactive oxygen species, likely mediated by the Fenton reaction, thereby decreasing cancer cell viability and working in cooperation with radiation and/or cisplatin. Because there is no known chemical UROD inhibitor suitable for use in translational studies, we aimed to design, synthesize, and characterize such a compound. Initial in silico-based design and docking analyses identified a potential porphyrin analogue that was subsequently synthesized. This species, a porphodimethene (named PI-16), was found to inhibit UROD in an enzymatic assay (IC 50 = 9.9 mM), but did not affect porphobilinogen deaminase (at 62.5 mM), thereby exhibiting specificity. In cellular assays, PI-16 reduced the viability of FaDu and ME-180 cancer cells with half maximal effective concentrations of 22.7 mM and 26.9 mM, respectively, and only minimally affected normal oral epithelial (NOE) cells. PI-16 also combined effectively with radiation and cisplatin, with potent synergy being observed in the case of cisplatin in FaDu cells (Chou-Talalay combination index ,1). This work presents the first known synthetic UROD inhibitor, and sets the foundation for the design, synthesis, and characterization of higher affinity and more effective UROD inhibitors.

In this paper, conventional, hedge-algebras-based and optimal hedge-algebras-based fuzzy controllers, respectively denoted by HAFCs and OHAFCs, are designed to suppress vibrations of a structure against earthquake. The interested structure is a building modeled as a four-degrees-of-freedom structure system with one actuator, which is an active tendon, installed on the first floor. The structural system is simulated against the ground motion, acting on the base, of the El Centro earthquake ( Mw = 7.1) in the USA on 18 May 1940. The control effects of FC, HAFC and OHAFC are compared via the time history of the floor displacements and velocities, control error and control force of the structure.

Attention is paid to the stability in the vertical position of a damped-elastic-jointed inverted pendulum subjected to a time-periodic follower force. The different values of the angular coefficient of the follower force are considered. Simulation results are exposed to illustrate the effect of OFCHA in comparison with FCHA and CFC.
In previous papers, we introduced a new reasoning method based on quantifying linguistic domains,... more In previous papers, we introduced a new reasoning method based on quantifying linguistic domains, established a new fuzzy control algorithm, called hedge-algebras-based controller (HAC), and applied it to solve some fuzzy control problems. The HAC does not require fuzzy sets to provide the semantics of the linguistic terms used in the fuzzy rule system rather the semantics is obtained through the semantically quantifying mappings (SQMs). It was shown that the new method is very effective, i.e. for these problems it is always able to efficiently control the process toward the stable state. In the algebraic approach, the design of an HAC leads to the determination of the parameters of SQMs, which are the fuzziness measure of primary terms and linguistic hedges occurring in the fuzzy model, and the weights of a weighted averaging operator. However, there exists another problem, namely, how one can determine the optimal parameters of the method. In the present paper, we improved the HAC's design by adding an optimal step that aims to find the optimal parameters of HAC using a genetic algorithm (GA). To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we apply it to solve again the inverted pendulum problem and the problem of holding an object on a "hill". The results demonstrate the good performance of the designed HAC.
