CAVE: The Design of a Precision Metrology Instrument for Studying Performance of KDP Crystals

A device has been developed to measure the frequency conversion performance of large aperture pot... more A device has been developed to measure the frequency conversion performance of large aperture potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals. Third harmonic generation using ICDP is critical to the function of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser. The crystals in the converter can be angularly or thermally tuned but are subject to larger aperture inhomogeneities that are functions of growth manufacturing and mounting. The CAVE (Crystal Alignment Verification Equipment) instrument scans the crystals in a thermally and mechanically controlled environment to determine the local peak tuning angles. The CAVE can then estimate the optimum tuning angle and conversion efficiency over the entire aperture. Coupled with other metrology techniques, the CAVE will help determine which crystal life-cycle components most affect harmonic conversion.

It is generally accepted that if the Shroud of Turin is the burial cloth of Jesus that it is only... more It is generally accepted that if the Shroud of Turin is the burial cloth of Jesus that it is only mentioned in passing in the New Testament, and those few references are all in the gospel accounts and provide no real details. Many, if not most New Testament scholars seem to doubt that the Shroud is even authentic. However, in a difficult to understand passage, 1 John 5:6-8, there might be a record of the Shroud. This paper will thus examine the dating of this epistle, and the gospel it is linked to (John) for hints as to when it was written, often assumed to be late 1st century, but internal evidence might suggest closer to mid-1st century as well as the passage in question. The passage will be carefully reviewed to attempt to determine what I meant to its 1st century audience with repeated references to “water”, “blood” and “Spirit”. Here especially, since “Spirit” is referenced as a witness, and biblical witnesses must be independent of the person judging their testimony, we run into the question of, just what is meant here. How can “Spirit” give independent, objective testimony? The answer lies in both ancient philosophy, where the concern was ultimate reality, and modern consciousness studies, ancient philosophy’s close cousin, realms where what we see as shadows might be more real than the material realm. This ultimately leads to the Shroud of Turin peering out at us from the pages of the New Testament where it has lain hidden for almost two millennium.

Josephus also makes limited contributions. Doing this presents numerous places where either God is mightily intervening or everything is a myth, depending on one’s views. And then there are comments in various NT epistles that make no sense given what we think we know, and differing explanation abound. But what if we remember that ancient histories were written to deliver a message, not to recite facts, and then take what appear to be well-established facts, and some “clearly irrelevant” records that agree, at least in part, with those facts, and seek to recreate the actual history of the first roughly 40 years of the Christian church. We can find support for some claims, such as the existence of Jesus and the resurrection, find denial of others, find logical explanations for some strange comments in the epistles or historic events and also uncover some unpleasant truths that may make us uncomfortable
