The sequence of the chapters reflects the preparation arylazo-imino ligands and subsequent reactions with organotin precursors and their characterization with the help of analytical and spectroscopic data. The solid state structures of some representative complexes were determined using single crystal X-ray crystallography. The work has been divided in six chapters.

Recrystallisation from a mixture of CHCI3 and petroleum ether (303-313 K) (4/1) gave orange blocks in 71 % yield; mp 379 K-380 K. The structure is polymeric owing to the presence of bidentate bridging carboxylate ligands which form disparate Sn-0(1) and Sn-0(2)' distances of 2.149(4) Â and 2.586(4) Â, respectively (symmetry operation: x, 0.5-y,-1.5+z). The Sn atom is thus fivefold-coordinated, exisiting in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry with the Sn atom lying 0.1963(5) Â out of the C3 plane in the direction of the 0(1) atom. The axial O-Sn-O angle is 173.8(2)°. The structure reported here resembles closely that found for the Me3Sn analogue (see réf. 1). Is is noted that the disparity in the Sn-O bond distances is greater in the Et3Sn species (i.e. 0.437 Â cf. 0.358 Â). Both structures conform to a common motif, i.e. trans-C3Sn02, found for similar compounds (see ref. 2). Note, the H postion of the hydroxyl group was not located.

The Cd—I bond lengths of the central core are close and uniformly longer than the exocyclic Cd—I bond. The coordination sphere of the CdIIatom is completed by two N atoms of a chelating methyl 4-[(pyridin-2-ylmethylidene)amino]benzoate ligand, and is based on a square pyramid with the terminal I atom in the apical position. The three-dimensional crystal packing is stabilized by C—H...O and C—H...π interactions, each involving the pyridine ring.

The Mossbauer data of the complexes indicate that the carboxylato-group chelates the tin atom in a cis-trigonal-bipyramidal (cis-SnP3O2) geometry while the two triphenyltin complexes derived from o-(4-dimethylaminobenzalidine) and o-(2-nitrobenzaldine)-benzoic acid adopt meridian-al- trigonal-bipyramidal (mer-SnPh3ON) geometry at tin

The Iongest wavelength transition of the ligand is bathochromically shifted on complexation, the magnitude of the shift is related to the stability of the metal complex. Spectral and magnetic moment data suggest tetrahedral stereochemistry around the metal atom.

The products were coloured solids with minimal solubilities in most unreactive solvents. Based on infrared spectral studies a tetrahedral structure is suggested for the adducts where the bidentate ligand is bonded to tin through the phenolic oxygen atom of the aldehydic group.
